Hi all,

I have a DEF question for you. I filled up my DEF tank and have driven 500 miles or so and the gauge slowly (normally) fell. When it hit 3/4 full mark it seems it stopped moving. No alerts or such and is running ok. Does the DEF usage drop in hot weather? Any other ideas…

DEF usage will be about 1-2% of the amount of fuel burned. You won't use much DEF unless your towing. The gauge isn't linear either, if your not seeing any warnings on the dash don't worry about it. DEF shouldn't evaporate out of the tank.

Mine is pretty linear. I've not seen it stop like that. But as mentioned, if you're not towing, it may move very slowly. I did a 900 mile trip recently pulling my bass boat and it only dropped from full to 3/4. Hauling my bigger/taller enclosed trailer increases the use quite a bit though.

How can that be? Every RAM/Cummins forum, since the 2013 MY, has had posts about the non-linear readings of the DEF gauge. Either you have a very unique DEF tank and sensor placement within that tank, or you are using the DEF gauge readings between towing light and heavy to form a conclusion, or you do not understand the definitions of "linear" and "non-linear".

LOL! Nice. I know the difference, and mine has been linear over the 2 years I've owned it in all cases. Towing light, towing heavy and not towing.

I agree with BossHogg and Crash. It is not linear at all. Mine would stay full for a long time and then drop fast.

Mine was never linear either, not by a long shot.

I have 3,500 on my '22 1500 ECO diesel. Have used just under a 1/4 tank of Def. I rarely tow a trailer with a UTV. I guess I should get 10,000 miles on 5 gallons of DEF.

You would have to get 40 mpg in those 10k miles for you to only use 5 gallons. DEF usage is around 50:1 one gallon of DEF will be consumed for every 50 gallons of diesel. If you average 25 mpg like most Ecodiesels, then you will need about 8 gallons of DEF within that 10k.
