exhaust drone...mood? discouraged

Thx for the tip Rick. Something I see they have I'm considering is their Twister resonator. 5" inch bottle like the Walker, about same length 18" but uses that auger tech which seems to get good reviews. I figure I won't be out anymore $ trying it and I expect I won't be any worse off sound wise.

Ok so I wrapped it from the muffler inlet as far as I could go forward with a 50’ roll, which was just shy of the crossmember. It did seem to make a difference but I only drove a short distance, could barely hear the exhaust cruising in 8th. Exhaust note seems deeper as well. We’ll see, if it still bugs me then it’s the Mufflex suppression pipe.

Just got back from a good long drive with the wife, wanted a different perspective since I'm damn near deaf in one ear and I always have high expectations. And after really driving and putting it through most scenarios it did make a difference, a pretty big one in fact. She pointed out that when the drone happened I couldn't hear her, I can plain as day now. Of course I told her that's not necessarily a good thing lol. I think bang for the buck, $16 vs $275 it a winner. Makes me wonder what might happen if I wrap what I didn't have enough for.

Thats great to hear! I'm thrilled that you came up with the heat tape idea. I too have quite bad hearing in my left ear. Lol. I find thats whats left if I don't think about it I don't notice.

I still have a nagging thought to try the flo pro auger type resonator as I won't be out anymore money than my current Walker bottle...but if I end up taking a step back from a really decent solution, then I'm back to where I was 2 weeks ago & out 300 more canadian. My big road trip is in 4 days. After that its nothing but short sprints & because I'm not working/don't know if I will be working it seems frivolous because my next step would be trying a solo mach 44 (300 plus probably and 100 bucks install).

I did notice something else interesting today as well. Actually noticed it a bunch now that i'm really solution focused. So say I'm at 1500-1600 rpm but on cruise control & engine is under load (flat road) and I'm hearing a little drone... Then when I hit a slight downhill stretch so the engine load is reduced but rpm is showing as still 1500-1600, there is zero drone. Which made me wonder if what I'm hearing is drone persay. But then I think engine noise not handled properly IS causing the drone. And is not the same as exhaust noise. Plus for me anyway the annoying frequency of drone is low frequency. If that can be reduced it helps my tolerance...a lot.

If that all makes any sense. Lol.

Actually it does make sense and probably applies to mine as well. When I’m cruising it’s pleasant now, I actually had to convince the wife that it’s still the same out the back as she likes the sound. I attached mine with the stainless ties in case I didn’t like it. Going to order some stainless clamps now.

Lol about the wife. Fyi, 3" gear clamps should work. I had bought 4" originally but smallest setting is 3.15" I believe. The 3" work a lot better as I think they went to like 3.2 or 3.25".

This isn't a cheap option but it works. My previous truck was a Nissan Titan, the manifolds cracked so I swapped to a long tube header and high flow cats. The drone was insane at just about any rpm. It was a single exit exhaust so I only needed one. It barely affected the overall tone while almost completely killing the drone. Like others have said, drone is caused by sound frequencies. Placement of a resonator is very important in removing the drone. On my Titan it was at the rear right near the spare tire. Which is very similar to the factory resonator location on the ram exhaust.

I know these work and this is what I'll be using. I may do a muffler delete and replace the oem resonators with 2 of these.

I did a double layer wrap with 2" x 25' fiberglass exhaust wrap this morning. It was done from the muffler inlet forward to the front hanger and back to the muffler.
That sure was a great idea Razzman with the exhaust wrap and a lot less cheaper than another resonator.

Yup had a 2009 with the Cajun Setup man it was LOUD but the truck was pretty quick

I started with a Carven Progressive. Major drone @ 55-65mph. I researched every option seen here. I just couldn't justify sinking big money back into the exhaust, but the drone had to go.

I switched out the Progressive for a Borla XS Sportsman. I also had it welded in proper. No matter how I tried there was always some tiny exhaust leaks with those damn DIY clamps. Now the drone is so slight any music will take it out. But, when I stomp on the pedal the Borla roars.

$130 for the Borla and $65 for the install. Well worth it.

Considering true dual, eliminate the Y, and do the Borla Pro XS dual in dual out muffler.
