1999 2500 4x4 diesel stick shift 5 speed. pops out of 1st when going down hill, when on level ground, engine running, gearshift in NEUTRAL, no brakes, makes a 'clunk', kinda 'surges' a little. actually moves the truck.. at times difficult to put into 1st or reverse, have to work the clutch a couple of times. drained, flushed and refilled trans, no change.

any thoughts on issue before I hand it over to a shop for a looksee?

Sounds like you have some shift linkage issues and/or with the throw out bearing assembly.

Sounds like the 1-2 shift fork is loose on the shift rail. 5-reverse also has plastic feet on it that go bad, but usually hard 1 or reverse is due to synchros being worn out.

When the 1-2 shift fork gets loose on the shift rail it gets thrown out of first when in gear, and when in neutral will often try to bite into 1st or 2nd depending on which way it floats.

best option is to have it torn down and inspected for wear/damage.
