Headlight Baking

I'm about to take the plunge and upgrade my '15 projectors. Does anybody have any tips/tricks to baking the assemblies?

I had planned on taking off the back "panel" used to get to the bulbs inside, removing the bolts and covering the big hole with plumbing tape. Other than that all I know is to preheat to 250/275 F and pop in for 7 minutes.

I'll be using new butyl rubber to seal the housing when finished. My understanding is to put the new rubber in and again bake for another 7 minutes to seal it up? I may even add silicone around the housing for added measure.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. The thought of putting plastic into an oven scares the crap out of me!

No need to cover the bulb holes as you don't have any particles flying around in the oven. As for baking back together, you should be able to use the OEM sealant already in the groove... it just need's be hot enough and pliable to stick and form back around the front.

7 minutes wont make a dent in them. Do 17 Minutes at 275 degrees to get them going, then youll probably need to put them in 1 or 2 more times for 5 minutes to soften up the permaseal.

DONT REUSE THE SEALANT. Either get some retrorubber from Retrofit source or go to a local auto parts store and get some butyl tape.

Your first light you'll probably reheat 2 or 3 times before you get it apart. Nerves, not knowing where/how to start, afraid of breaking something. The second one is a breeze.

Check after 15 minutes, as I know some people who have had the amber corners start to curl up from the heat.
