An understandable question Sherman.
I could have just got a new camshaft, lifter and valves but at the end of the day, I still would have had an engine with a 100,000 miles on it. The price difference for me was $2000 more to replace the the engine. So as I planned on keeping this truck for 10 years, it was the best decision for me.

Agree with this totally, especially on a higher mileage engine. To me, it's a no brainer...pay $4K for a new cam/lifters, or spend $2K or $3K more for a new or reman. engine. I've already thought about it, if I had the cam/lifter issue, it'll be a new engine.

Man I hope for your sake Jasper engines have improved. In my younger years I blew the engine in my Camaro from beating mustangs all to death every weekend. Put in a Jasper engine because of the warranty. After the 3rd jasper engine within a year (which they did pay for with warranty including labor), I traded the car off. The engines were all totally gutless too.
We had a few failures with Leggett engines in metro Atlanta area also.I think all those places have significant failures.Mass rebuilders

220,000 miles on this 2004 Hemi...... still running extra strong and no Hemi Tick.... THANK YOU View attachment 198089 REDLINE!!!
Yours is a 2004. Grateful that you have not had a problem. However forces have been at work after that and caused an engine change to include cylinder drop off to starve them in order to save gas......
MDS WILL BE TURNED OFF IN MY NEXT VIDEO......
REDLINE! hell yes! That's what im going to from here on out.
What filter do you use bro?

BTW, that is the Dark Knight of trucks!!!

I hate to like this comment but I hope this doesn't happen to me again.

While i am here i will also share that i have the factory transmission at 220,000 miles as well and i have never ever changed the fluid or serviced it. I think i may have added a pint or two over the years but no leaks and the pan has never been off the case.
I have a 10 ft dump trailer and a 7X14 ft closed trailer that i tow with my truck for my business and no problems.

I went on the Jasper site and it says nothing about the Lifters, mentions the Cam, Pistons and rings, connection rods, wrist pins, rod bearings, crank bearings and crank, and of course oil pump, timing chain and gears and tensioners, New Heads and Intake plenum.
Did you go on the quote site?
I'm gonna make a video on all this for you guys. Like i sad earlier or on a different thread or YouTube.... Can't remember now. I will make a video on the break down of all this and give links.
Its gonna be a super boring informal video lol....

Thank you Sir,
My transmission has 105,000 mi on it and i intend to do the same as you since my owners manual says it's a lifetime transmission. (some will hate me for saying this lol)
But you have proven my point.... [emoji23]

A little over 92,000 when mine failed on my 2011 Sport. There is a company (can't remember the name off the top of my head) making replacement lifters that have more material on the roller ends, and eliminates the VVT by removing the part in the center of the block under the manifold that triggers the VVT. If mine fails again, I will be going to this.

Why disable VVT?

Is “hemi tick” really so common that there’s a greater chance of it happening than not happening to every vehicle with a 5.7 in it?

Not trying to scare anybody but with the research I've done, it is common.
I'm telling you guys right now, use all full synthetic. Redline is the way I'm going to go from here on out.

What’s the rate of engine failure?

IE how many engines are failing in relation to how many 5.7s have been put in vehicles total?

Just a hunch that it may be a big part of the problem with lifter failure. I have read a lot about all the manufacturers who have the different names for it, all have the same problem. Don't know if they all use the same cam and lifter provider or not but it seems to be a problem, regardless of make. My step-son had a 2010 Honda Accord with the V6 and it did the same thing. Read many posts on here from other members who know someone that had brand x vehicles and the have the same issue.

VVT in the Hemi has been around longer than the lifter failure, I think it started in 2009.

Lifter failures are worse around 2011-2012 and seemed to get a little better each model year after, though still not 100%.

Ive had 3 Japanese vehicles with VVT (one of which goes even further and has variable valve timing and lift), and none of them make ticking noises or have ever failed at any point.

IMHO its a cost-cutting leading to crappy materials issue, in addition to spec-ing "lighter" 5W-20 oil because of CAFE rules, and a little bit of a design flaw thrown in (how its not easy for oil to make it to the rear of the camshaft, especially at low idle RPMs).

But variable valve timing and even MDS are not really the issue.

That's true, since none Mds lifters fail also. Some say the components known to fail have been upgraded beginning in 2016. Only time will tell.

My 04 just went down a couple of months ago with 225k on it. I think it had more to do with me letting my 16-year-old nephew drive it for 2 years and not making sure he did the maintenance properly. I gave it to him with 180k on it and it still ran and pulled like a beast. It is knocking real bad but has not blew anything out of the engine. looking into rebuild vs replace with a jasper. I was quoted 6k from them.

That's about what I paid brother.
here's my breakdown:
5.7 hemi Jasper engine $4,685
Engine install kit $380
MDS solenoids $366
Anti-freeze coolant $51
Oil filter, oil change $28
labor $1,050
Total $6,976
Hope this helps any future decisions brother.
