Good morning

Got a question folks, my 2009 Ram 1500 with a Hemi and 78,000 miles has a ticking sound on startup and disappears once it’s warmed up, is this the infamous Hemi lifter tick problem or the infamous broken manifold bolt or warped manifold problem? Bout five years ago my Ram was getting a recall issue addressed and the service department repaired some broken manifold bolts without me asking to do it, never really noticed it prior to this event. The service tech said seeing how I have the original Dodge Limited Lifetime Powertrain Warranty from new in 2009, there’s no charge for this service. Thanks for any responses.

Easy way to check if its the exhaust manifold is to look at the manifold through the front driver wheel well, give the heat heat a tug on the back side. if it moves a lot, it has probably separated from the nut/stud combo that also holds the exhaust manifold on.

Great info, thanks for that.

So my 2019 was just diagnosed with the exhaust being the cause of my ticking (glad its not lifters) and the dealer just wants to replace the gasket and bolts. But it seems to me for the bolts to be bad or broken the manifold would have to be warped. True? My fear is they are going to try and re-gasket and re-bolt the warped manifold hoping it doesn't leak instead of replacing the manifold. At the least it seems like it should be removed and checked for warping?
Headers starting to look like an option, if not now, down the road.

Usually it isn't warping causing this, and gaskets should even deal with some warping. The main thing is the bolts, if they put the bolts on every corner and it is holding tight, and then it is still ticking, then they would check for warping. They should be able to see the bolts broken, if they are broken then this is how you would proceed. The good news is they are accepting responsibility, so even if it takes two appointments I'm sure they will make it right.

Had broken bolts in my last truck. Pulling shaking did not show anything. Took a deep look at every bolt to finally find the one and a second bolt fell off while removing header. Good luck
