This might sound like a silly question, but I was watching a YouTube video on a guy talking about his dodge ram which has a knob shifter in it. He brought up when he shifts gears from like park to drive for instance that he will shift the gears slowly, waiting like 3 seconds between shifting just so it's not rough on the truck as he explained.

Is this something that is necessary if you're at a complete stop while doing this? I've seen a handful of people will shift threw the gears without any pauses

The ZF 8 speed is shift by wire, doesn't matter how fast or slow you turn the knob of the transmission it will only shift so fast and won't do so if there is an issue. You can even be traveling down the freeway at 70 mph and shift into reverse, the truck will throw up a warning to put the truck back into drive. If it's not shifted back the transmission will go into neutral.

If anything, shifting it slowly from park to drive is forcing it to shift from neutral (park is neutral with the parking pawl engaged), then reverse, then neutral, then forward, whereas if you twist it quickly it would just go directly from park to forward. Like crash68 said, it's shift by wire, there is no mechanical connection. No doubt there is some short delay built in so it's not acting on a change until it's reasonably certain you've stopped on a position.

Once you fully press the Brake Pedal
It does not matter how quickly you shift

That may change if the vehicle is Four Wheel Drive
or
If the vehicle is Standard Stick & the Vehicle's Driver is an Amatuer, ( which most people are )

there are lots of experts on everything, Most are just guys with a option.
MY option, its a stupid idea, the computor is the one doing the shifting I presume with these modern trucks.
