Hello All,

Just replaced the transfer case in my 2012 2500 (front case was cracked from bad driveshaft) Driveshaft was replaced, and I just installed a new ("professionally" rebuilt) transfer case (NP2710) and I believe it is defective....there is a lot of circular play in the front output yoke/flange, more then I believe should be there.
I have been working on 4x4s for many years, and I don't recall this much play. No leaks, no noise, just seems excessive to me. My question: Does anyone else have this "play" in their front output yoke/flange?
Rebuilder refuses to replace unit (long story) so I am pretty much looking at "its normal" or I need to repair it.
Any help is appreciated.

How much play are you talking about?

When you say circular play, I assume your talking about the the amount of yoke rotation before you feel resistance?

How much, in degrees?

Actual backlash between the pinion and ring gear should be very little:

But if your checking it while it's assembled, it could be tolerances in the spider gears that your calling slack.

Have a mechanic look at it.

The play is up, down, right, left, hence circular...unloaded and yes, assembled, its newly rebuilt with 128 miles on it. 2 mechanics have looked at it, they feel its excessive, but they arent rebuilders. So, my original question of does anyone else have any play of this magnitude? I do have 2-YouTube vids showing the play, not sure if I could include them.

there aren’t spider gears nor backlash to set in a t-case, it is also chain driven.

I’d question when he rebuilt it, did he replace the bushings & bearings.

My apologies. Not sure why, but my when my eyes saw transfer case, my brain translated to differential.

I should have had coffee before reading your post.

I haven't worked on the specific model you have, but I've had my BW 44-44 apart, and a 44-45 as well. I never noticed anything like your describing in either of them. I think the 44-45 is similar to yours.

It certainly sounds like he may have done a shoddy rebuild, or lied about rebuilding it.

If you got a written statement from your mechanics, it would be a fairly easy small-claims court case. I bet just getting the notice-to-appear order from the court would cause Him to make it right with you.

I understand completely, unfortunately it's actually a large rebuilding company that I should have researched better because it appears that there's a lot of Google complaints on their engine rebuilding problems and them not honoring warranties, I went with them because they offered a 3-year no mileage warranty but I guess the warranty is no good if they choose not to honor it, appreciate your reply regardless.

Jasper?

transfer cases really aren’t that hard to take apart & rebuild, easier & less parts than an auto trans

If it engages and there isn't any vibrations, I'd let it go. How does it drive?
