looking to do first oil change on my 18' 5.7 and i would like to know if someone has the royal purple filter part number? i think there is a regular and larger filter, i am looking for the large filter. Going with redline 5w-30 right from the start. I am only at 1600 miles. figured i would change at 2000 and again in 2000 for break in. any help is appreciated.
thanks Kenny
As mentioned I wouldn't do Redline for that short of a run. I would go with Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 (PYB) for those 2000 mile flushes. It's cheap, it has a good amount of moly, and it's just all around good oil.

20-820 = large RP filter 10-48 small one

If you are gonna do a 2k mile flush change (real good idea IMO), I wouldn't run redline or a RP filter, just use m1 and a paper filter for a short run, or even a conventional oil. I think m1 is on costco deal right now, but even super tech at walmart would be good for that short run.

thanks Burla and R.L.K for the filter #. Just so i know, is it just cost on way you recommend m1 and cheaper filter on these first short run oil changes? I was thinking, during the break in period, my engine could use the additional protection of Redline. i understand the filter since it will be changed in 2k. I am not questioning your knowledge, just want to know for myself. Thanks

No it is the opposite, during break in period you want to knock down sharp edges in engines. It even says on redline bottle dont use before engine has 3500 miles or something.

Oh yeah forgot all about that! Yeah definitely don't use Redline for the 2 2000 mile flushes

My last oil change I used pennzoil ultra platinum and a Mobil 1 extended performance filter. Don’t hear much talk about the Mobil 1 filters, hope it’s a decent filter ?

Yes they are decent filters, combo synthetic and paper is better then paper. But why not just use synthetic fiber media? Do yourself a favor and go back to the first post if you haven't. In order the synthetic fiber media keeps your engine cleanest the longest with the best flow, then comes combo filters, then comes paper filters, pretty simple. So m1 filter comes in 4th, but the 3 above it all are synthetic fiber, so what is on this patch is what travels through your engine at 30 microns, the whiter the better. The first rectangler patch below, royal purple filter. The third rectangle just above your m1 filter, Fram Ultra which is cheaper then your m1 and is full synthetic.

Thanks again to the forum member adrianp89 who found this test.

Fellas, this article is why you do not want 30 micron contamination rolling around your engine, and if you see the test above, the Royal Purple filters assures you will not have 30 micron particles in your engine.

Society Of Automotive Engineers (SAE)
Paper Number 881825 Entitled
"Correlating Lube Oil Filtration Efficiencies
With Engine Wear"
Written by David R. Staley of General Motors Corp.

This is the conclusion of this study

The researchers drew the following conclusions:
Abrasive Engine wear can be substantially reduced with an increase in single pass efficiency. Compared to a 40-Micron filter, Gasoline Engine wear was reduced by 50 percent with 30-Micron filtration. Likewise, wear was reduced by 70 percent with 15-Micron filtration. Controlling the abrasive contaminants in the range of 2 to 22 Microns in the lube oil is necessary for controlling Engine wear.

So I feel like you guys have all of the info, if you want to use paper filters after everything I posted, that is on you. We don't have a 15 micron test, but it could only be worse news across the board of the 30 micron test. And the thing the test doesn't spell out but I feel it should, is that spun microglass lasts your entire oil change interval, paper fails and when it does you can fit anything this side of a marble through it. Bypass is worth a look, but you need to find one that is synthetic or it defeats the purpose in the first place.

do your own research, look at white papers on critical particle size for engine wear.

Yeah they are. Try cutting a cheap filter open with a hack saw and then a RP with a hack saw. Huge difference in build quality
That is biggest difference I notice the metal can is thick and strong. The only ones I have seen that are as thick is Bosch Distance and The EA Amsoil
Ones. I have been meaning to try the Purolator Boss just to see.

I prefer the RP filter for the microglass 100% synthetic filtering media .... I do also like the thick construction for rock / foreign debris protection when off the payment [emoji16][emoji16][emoji16]

They are built too good for me, damn hard cutting those open and I'm too cheap to get one of those filter cutters, lol. But there is no filter on the market even close with exception to the Amsoil EA. From my "elementary" findings I really don't think wix xp will be as effective. It is thick versus thin media, the thin media simply wont get as much imo. If somehow they have the same fiber count it is just tighter, then maybe. But, I know the RP/Amsoil is thicker so it is the easy choice.

Enjoy that Turkey Ronnie, believe it or not I did a turkey fryer on the stove top one year, I swear that was a daft move. Once I got to heat and dropped the bird in I was like damn, this is a darwin move. Grabbed the fire extinguisher and prayed I didn't drop it. All that and the bird was over done. Now, I just use the rotisserie, freaking perfect everytime and no oil to deal with.

The Turkey was perfect !! 325°f , 3.5 mins per pound .
I've always cooked them outside in large pots , I boil 4-5 hundred lbs of crawfish each year and I have a few cookers .
