So I am about to change my trans fluid (98k) miles and I was wondering if I should go ahead and order a new pan. Not sure what type of plastic it is, but plastic does seem to break down over time while at the same time exposed to heat daily. Any suggestions?? Also, i see some saying to change the fluid and other are saying dont worry about it if you're not having issues. I don't want to start having issues with fluid that's been in almost 100k miles, so that's why I'm changing it. Thoughts on that as well are welcome....thanks

If it's an 8 speed, they only way you're changing the transmission filter is by buying a new pan.The factory filter is part of the transmission pan,and isn't a servicable filter.
PPE makes a really good aluminium pan, that can be had in 1 and 2 quart deeper versions.

The plastic pans on these zf transmissions have no problems holding up over time. But like Wild one said, the pan and filter are a single unit. There are tons of options now in the market, clones from like 35 bucks up. If you are going to replace with a mopar OEM then you're better off getting that PPE pan with their replaceable filters.
Close to the same price as OEM mopar. I put one in a year ago, no regrets.

I'm not aware of any harm done to a transmission by performing scheduled maintenance. Engineers recommend maintenance intervals even if in some cases the lubricant is fine because some population it won't be and they don't know which ones will be in need.

Thanks all for the replies. I will surely be replacing the pan with either the OEM or PPE....

If you have warranty in play, consider OE pan/filter, part # 68225344AA

Otherwise, the PPE pan is virtually the same price as OE. You will need to transfer the bolt sleeves from the original pan to the PPE. They will keep the gasket in place and prevent crushing it.

The replaceable filter is also a plus with the PPE pan.

As far as fluid, your call. Recommend OE if warranty is in play. If not, quite a few members here have used Valvoline MaxLife with great results.

TIP: The transmission fill plugs were installed by Hercules, break it loose BEFORE you drain the fluid, just to avoid issues. I had to use a cheater on mine to break it loose.

Follow the green sheet instructions copiously posted throughout these forums by @Wild one, and you'll be golden.

VERY IMPORTANT: You will need to raise the rear tires 8-10 inches off the ground to level the transmission pan rail.

Good luck. Here's to a smooth service.

That's a great write up if you want to confuse the heck out of him. Keep it simple.
I thought I did :laughing1: :laughing1: :laughing1: :happy160:

As mentioned later, if doing this again, I would likely use an 1/8 NPT ball valve rated for oils. install it into the temp probe port on the PPE pan.
Using a cheap 1 or 2 gallon garden sprayer and hose, one could then fill the trans with "fill plug" out adding 6.5 -7.5 qts depending on which pan was chosen. Start the motor, go through the demented fill check until proper temp is reached. if needed add more fluid till it shows signs of dysentery and install fill plug :favorites13:
