I have a few stories. Back in the end of 1986 I called the local GM dealership and ordered a brand new 1987 IROC Z with a 5.7. It was the first year they were putting the 5.7 in them and they were only making 1000 that year. Gave a $500 deposit. I was 17 and turned 18 in February 1987. Salesman told me they were making all the 5.0's first then would do the 5.7's at the end. Kept calling to check on status and kept being told they hadn't started making them yet. About 4 months after I ordered it my mother called another bigger dealership and they said they already had one on their lot and another on the truck on the way there. Called the first dealership back and they told mu mother they still hadn't started making them yet. Mom drove over there and got my deposit back and we went to the other dealer and bought one from them.
Back around 1998 I was looking to buy a newer truck. Found a 1997 at one dealership. Talked to sales lady. Her husband was the sales manager but wasn't there. After some back and forth and her calling her husband I told her if they can go another $500 I'd take it. She called him and they agreed. I told her I'd be back in the morning with the cash and left a check for a deposit. Next morning she calls me and says they can't go the extra $500. Seems her husband got my trade in confused with another one. I told her we already agreed and I left a deposit. She said they still can't do it. I told her my attorney would be interested in hearing about this. She said, nevermind, you can come and get the truck. I told her I wasn't interested and for her to rip up my check and mail it back to me. About a week later I get a card in the mail with an apology and my check.
The biggest one is the local CJD dealer here in my town. It had been sold a few times and was a pretty good dealership until the current owner bought it about 10 or 12 years ago. Garage used to be full of cars. Now there are only a couple of cars in there as nobody will take theirs there anymore. They had a deal where you buy 1 oil change and get 3 free. I took my truck in and get home and leaking oil. Filter was loose. This happened on my truck, my wife Commander and my daughters Wrangler. They also had a deal buy 3 tires get 1 free. Needed tires for my 2013 1500 so took it over. Driving to work the next day it was vibrating so bad I thought my teeth were gonna fall out. Called the dealer and service manager was out that day. Fill in tells me the mechanic told here I had a bent rim. I said it didn't have a vibration when I brought it in and if it was bent they would have tried to sell my a new wheel. Turns out they never balanced them. Same dealer...step son bought a brand new 2015 Dart. A few weeks later has engine issues so they replace the engine under warranty. Not the dealers fault. They replace the engine but route the wiring harness wrong, lost the 'flapper' door in the inner fender and when backing it off the lift they cracked his front bumper by apparently not having the lift all the way down. It was 'dented' outwards. Then a few weeks later takes it in for an oil change and tire rotation. They stripped his one factory locking lug nut so he has to bring it back the following week. They scratched the heck out of his black wheels. He goes to the manager and tells him he wants a new wheel. manager says they didn't scratch it. He tells them of all the issues we have had and manager loses his temper and tells him 'fine, we'll replace the wheel but we never want to see you in here again'. He tells them where to stick their new wheel and says 'you won't ever see me in here again'. Thats the last time anyone in our family has been there.
But it gets better. My wife works at a vocational technical school. Dealership hired a few 16 years olds on co-op to work in the shop. There weren't just oil change guys. they were doing full-fledged repairs on new cars.
Step-sons dad bought a used Gladiator. Had some kind of issue so he takes it to them. They can't figure it out so they send it to the local GM dealer (to be fair he bought it from the GM dealer). But the CJD dealer couldn't figure it out so sent it to the GM dealer. Same GM dealer I ordered the IROC from way back...lol. Anyway, ot sure what the issue ended up being with the Rubicon but they had it for 4 months.

My Father taught me how to buy a car. Be armed with all the info.
First have a copy of your "credit report"
Second get the $ numbers on line. Use Consumer Reports. Or USAA for Veterans. Or another service.
Never %100 accurate but better than no knowledge.
Now the fun part.
Find the truck you want.
Tell the salesman to get you a $ number and have him write it all down .
Then thank him/her very much and walk out the door. More than likely he will follow you out the door. I have been chased out of the driveway.
Make them sweat lol
Go home. Find another truck at a different dealership.
The possibilities are limitless.
The Point is ....U R IN CONTROL.
Have fun with it.

Wow , two months of being exposed to any dealer , you must be a very patient person.
The last couple cars I’ve tried for two hours .
I go in armed with knowledge on what I am after.

I’m not looking to have a long term relationship with the salesperson , I just want their asking price, then counter offer . If they want to go back and forth I tell them my offer again , then leave.

The phone is usually ringing in less than 1/2 hour .

Then I inform that due to health issues , the paperwork must be expedited as my health prevents me from staying more than a couple of hours . Somehow the paperwork is done quickly.
Or maybe it is my charming personality that comes out when buying a vehicle that speeds the process along.

I just sold my wife’s Kia last week, and am waiting for her to choose her next car. So this week or next I am going to meet another new dealer salesperson, wish us all luck. I wonder who’s going to have to wait in the truck during negotiations ?

Same plan.....You just don't make them sweat enough. LOL
I used to sell cars years ago. I know all the chitty crap they pulled on innocent people.

So, I have fun with it. And get what I want.

When I purchase for myself , it’s no holds barred.
I almost think I enjoy it to much .
This is why anymore , I just want to finish the deal and get away from those dirty bassturds.

And I suppose the impression I get from the sales person ,determines how my strategy unfolds.

Too old and tired to chase Dealers. Consumer Reports Buying Service is flawed. I used Consumer's Checkbook, but that became flawed after Dealers stopped using true invoice prices. So now it's back to just how much they'll discount their MSRP. For that I use Edmund's True Market Value Pricing, which has some kind of sales data crawler that shows vehicle sales data for your region.

Don't know how big their sample size is, but I've never had a Dealer argue with it. My current truck the Dealer looked at it and said 'done'. No haggling, no nonsense, no running around, no insults, no juvenile games.

If anyone is interested in a new truck there are some very good dealers nationwide that will quote prices, arrange financing and ship your new truck to you. The area I live in has nothing but slime ball dealers. Earlier this year we purchased a new 3500 Dually from a dealer in Texas, no fuss, no issues and a very good deal. Do a little research and save yourself $$ and headaches.

I'm sure that there are more than enough dealer horror stories to fill many volumes.
Dealers once were individuals who lived in the community and had a reputa

I did it in 6 hours back in 2008, July31st to be exact. I wanted a new, not used truck. Ford was advertising a huge, multi-tiered rebate in the 16 thousand dollar range on F-150s.
I trotted off the Tomball Ford, just north of Houston. I told the salesman that I wanted a new Lariat CC; loaded to the hilt EXCEPT with no sunroof. They had 2 on the lot, a marron one and a pearlescent white one, which I chose the white one.

He went and got the keys, we got in the truck for a test drive, and after less than a mile, I told him that I's take it.
He INSISTED that we go on a longer test drive because management required it. (He was a bit thick, because I'd made up my mind TO buy it)

I traded my 2007 Grand Marquis in and my pristine 2001 Miata BRG, with the rare automatic option and loaded with options and only 42 thousand on the odometer.

The amount owed on the Marquis and their offer made it a wash plus a couple of hundred extra for me.
We went round and round about the value of the 40MPG Miata. I wanted 9G's, they thought they'd steal it for 6.

AFTER my trade was agreed, THEN we got down to brass tacks on the amount of the truck. LSS (long story short), I drove off owing Ford Credit 14,998 dollars on a 42+ thousand dollar truck.

My ammo was 2 fold: It was the last day of the month (Their monthly quota) and gasoline was $4.50 a gallon for regular. The new truck was a guzzler and the Miata was worth more due to it's condition, mileage, and MPG. Nobody was buying gas guzzlers... so much so that the were not even interested in my Suburban.

I look up my credit report before I go to the dealership. I refuse to give them permission to run my credit until we have a deal on paper. I also like screwing with the salesmen when they try to play games.

I had an 89 Nissan Hardbody. Back in 1998, I went to the Toyota dealer, with a friend who was looking for a new truck. While he was dealing with the salesman, another came up to me and said he could get me into a brand new Toyota truck for $129.00 a month 36 month lease. I knew my credit wasn't the greatest at the time, but, it was decent (low 700s). Told him if he could do it, I would drive off with it. Well, 4-5 hours later, he was coming up with $400+ lease payments. I told him to call me when he could make the deal and left.

Couple days later I went the Dodge dealer near my house. Told the salesman I wanted a Ram 1500, blue, that I didn't care about trim, as long as it had electric windows and air conditioning. We looked around and they didn't have a blue on. He said lets test drive another one and if we can make a deal, they would check other dealers or order on from the factory. OK, took one for a drive. I liked it, so, we started working numbers. He kept coming back with $500+ payments for a 30 month lease. Told him I wasn't leasing, but, buying. he came back with $600+ payments for 72 months. FOR A STRIPPED DOWN TRUCK!!! Vinyl bench seat, vinyl flooring, no radio, nothing but electric windows and A/C. Told him he was nuts.

While sitting there, a blue Ram came driving past the showroom and parked on the front line. I tell the salesman. He said they didn't have one, so, I took hm out and showed him. He looked at it and said "oh, they must have had it in the shop, but, it is used". Told him to get the keys. Took it for a drive and said OK, how much is it? He went to check and came back with $19,999. I offered $15,000. Let the game begin. Said they would give me $1500 for my trade, I said ok to that. He went to check with the sales manager, but, left the paperwork on the table. I looked over what he was writing. The upped the price of the truck $1000, and were basically going to give only $500 for my trade. Well, when he came back with $19,500, I offered $14,000. He asked what happened to the $15,000 offer. Told him you come back with stupid numbers, I come back with stupid offers. Then asked about the raise in price to make it look like they were giving me more for my trade. He said I wasn't supposed to see that, so, I now offered $13,000 and told him to bring the sales manager over. He comes over and says best they can do is $18,999. I offerd $12,000. After I explained what was going on with my trade and with a little haggling between the manager an myself, I drove off in a 1996 Ram 1500 RC, with just about every available option for $16,000. Also kept my Nissan and sold it to a friend a few months later for $1400.

I was in that dealership for 6 hours. I had nothing better to do that day.

Couple days later, the Toyota dealer calls and asks when I am coming to pick up "my" truck? Told him I already did and it is in my driveway. He asked what I was talking about and said "my" truck was still on the lot. Told him I bought a Dodge because he couldn't make the deal he promised. He thanked me for wasting his time and hung up on me.

Bought my 2004, from the internet sales team. They quoted $25,999. I offered $20,000. They said "SOLD!" Was in and out in 1.5 hours.

I've also been thrown out of several dealerships and told never to come back. 1 threatened to call the cops on me. Yeah, ok.

The best fun I ever had was the first time buying at Dodge of Burnsville MN when I told them I write them a check for the balance of a vehicle after my trade in an DOC fees, it took the finance guy some time to fully understand what I was telling him and his boss too, after about 30 minutes of him talking to others about it they told me they had never had anyone come in and write them a check for the balance owed let alone with all of the paperwork for my purchase going to my credit union in Iowa City IA. I enjoyed it as they tried to say they could get me lower monthly payments, yet as hard as they tried to do so I would have had to take out a longer loan and at higher interest rates ( but the monthly payment was less lol) I can say when I went 3 more times to buy from them they remembered who I was so the time to get all paperwork done was cut down to about 35 minutes an only one time did I have to sign a back up contract because by the time we finished the credit union was closed until Monday, with it being closed they could not verify my 17K check was good... I just did something like this back in Jan at Toyota in Hillsboro OR was shocked how long it took and they claimed they had people pay cash for a vehicle before yet still instead they run my credit claiming it was Oregon law to prove I was who my Real ID claimed I was, it was a few days later that I found out my credit score took a 20 point drop, I was told don't worry it will come back up why yes it did 5 months later Grrrrrrr, well a week later I found out they lied they had not need to run my credit report being I had done business with them 3 years earlier so they knew who i was was, I was not happy about it thus ______________________ < insert the new excuse I was given there, I was shocked when General manager was like ho hum.......

Had they never heard of Net Present Value (time-value of money that determines payments)? Geez - this $hit is all over the interweb, now. I learned it in college. You can plunk it into a spreadsheet, or just use a finance website. I still have my textbook with interpolating tables. i.e. - pretty easy today to equalized monthly payments @ an interest rate with what the current price is for cash.

I've learned that when it comes to dealing with car sales people one can never tell what they think, do or even know

Last year I started researching a new RAV4 for the wife, and even though I wasn't ready to buy yet, I wanted to just go take a look at them in person. We have 2 major Toyota dealerships in my area, the first one I went to I was able to walk around the lot for about 30 minutes before a sales guy approached. I told him right off the bat I wasn't ready to buy yet, and was just doing research. He answered no problem, offered to answer any questions, and asked if I would leave my name and number. Being a sales guy myself, I agreed since I know things like that are taken into account for performance. He then left me alone other than a single follow up call 2 weeks later.

I then went to the other dealership and I didn't even get to turn my truck off before a sales guy was practically trying to open my door for me. Dude talked non-stop, trying to show me other vehicles that I told him I had no interest in. Of course he wanted me contact info which I reluctantly gave him because there was one particular vehicle I wanted to sit in. Figured I can I always just block their number after the fact. The hard sell continued until I finally just turned and walked back to my truck with the guy following and yammering on the whole time. They then followed up with 3-4 calls a week, every week. I was initially going to block the number but morbid curiosity got the better of me and I wanted to see just how long they would continue to try. 3 months later I guess they finally got the hint.

Wife and I were looking for a vehicle back in 2000. We weren't sure what our credit situation was, so we went to our credit union and told them we were in the market for a car, wanted to see our options.

They ran our credit, and gave us a voucher for $25K, said when we found a vehicle, write in the VIN, price, and sign it. If we used the full amount, our payments would be $450/month for 72 months. Easy-peasy.

We actually went to a local Dodge dealer because we wanted a 2001 Ram 1500, V8, stick, with cruise control.

We look at some trucks and the stickers, and go sit down with a salesman. I say "Give us an out the door price." He says he has to run our credit. I say, "Nope." He says, "Why not?" I say, "You give us a price, I write down the price and info on this voucher, sign it and that truck is ours."

He asks to see the voucher, and walks out of the room with it. Wife and I are dumbfounded. Salesman comes back with a bunch of papers, sets them on the desk, and walks out again.

Wife rifles through the papers, finds our voucher, and puts it in her purse. Salesman comes back in a couple minutes later, rifles through the papers as if looking for something. He NEVER SAYS A WORD, walks back out. Wife and I are looking at each other like, "WTF?" We end up leaving and going to the local Saturn dealer and getting something there, because we figured we needed not to use almost the full amount.

That was a whole 'nother experience, but not because of the voucher.

I absolutely despise the dealer games.

I won't put up with stupid people games. I send the build sheet to a dozen dealers, tell them i am going to factory order this exact vehicle in the next week. Give me your best all in, all fees, sales tax etc price. No second kicks, lowest price will get the deal. Most of the time I get quotes back from about 75%. My 2021 2500, there was a $22,000 spread from high to low. I emailed all the higher bids and told them they didn't get the deal, just after I went in and signed the deal with the low bid. Told them the price I bought for but not which dealer I bought from. When the vehicle was delivered, the dealer actually sold it to me for a hair over 5000 bucks LESS than we agreed by putting it through the fleet progranm using my company. It was their suggestion, in order to save me some money. That very much confirmed to me I picked the right guys to deal with.

A few of the higher bids, particularly a couple that were close, were really upset I wouldn't allow them to beat the low bidders price. Not sure they actually learned anything but I wasn't trying to teach them, just buy a pickup.

HI THERE! How're ya doin'?!?!

One wonders how late in life the pesky one finally became toilet trained!:321:

Just to add about my long post earlier. I said I was looking at a 1997 and the dealer changed their mind on the extra $500. Forgot to mention that I had went back to another dealer that I had been to a few days earlier. They had a 1994 F250. I ended up buying that but I was paying cash. I think I owed them about $17,000 but it would take me a few days to get the money. They let me take the truck that day and come back about a week later with the balance.
Another story. A former co-worker went to buy a new F150 back around 1999. He was about 19 but we were working in a steel mill with pretty much unlimited OT. He banked all his money away for about a year. He went to the dealer one night after banks were closed and found a truck. Salesman asked him how much he was putting down. Don said 15. Guy punches some numbers and tells him his payment. Don asked why so high. Guy says well 1500 isn't that much. Don said no, $15,000. Then the guy wouldn't let him take the truck that night as banks were closed. He told them if I don't take it tonight I'm going to a different dealer so they let him take it.
In 1989 my mother had a 1981 Buick Riviera. Great car but she woke up that morning for work and it wouldn't start. She asked me to go car shopping with her. Finds a brand new 1989 Olds Calais quad 4 5 spd. Her Buick is still sitting at home in the driveway. They made her an offer on it sight unseen and let her take the new car home with her that day. Oddly that dealership was right across the street from where I bought the F150.
Back around 1995 me and my wife went to look at an almost new Suburban. Dealer asked what we wanted our payments to be before we even looked at it. I told him I wanted to drive it first, etc. He said their policy was that I had to sign a paper agreeing if they got the payment to where I stated then I was required to buy the vehicle. This was before I could even drive it. I walked out the door.
