Trav what's your opinion on this one? What are they saying over there with all the newer stuff Valvoline is putting out, this stuff is 5 bucks and change per quart crazy high moly and boron.

Valvoline Extended Protection Full Synthetic Motor Oil SAE 5W-30 5 Quart

They seem to love that oil. Currently with restore and protect theres a mix of folks dismissing it and saying just run HPL as we know it cleans. And the other side of folks are willing to give it a shot. By all i can tell the restore and protect cleans dirty engines

Man I hope the formula is better then the focus group who is hanging these names on it, lol.

Is that 0w30 stout as well? Why you chose 0w40?
As far as i can tell its also a great oil. PAO/GTL/ester based. On the heavier side for a 0w30 kinda like HPL supercar and the old redline 0w30 but im not 100% sure how well it holds up, i dont see many UOAs with it. Interesting with that oil is theres no API donut on it and it makes no mention of being SN or SP on the label

I'd definitely be interested in it,but it's stupidly priced up here,i can buy Redline for $25.00 a quart, and the best price i've found for the Valvolene is $38.00 a quart.

tj and others, but it gets funky here as some hemi ticks are more susceptible to viscosity and some are more susceptible to additives. My truck is one like tj's, 5w20 and 5w30 redline were both good against tick but the more stout 10w30 redline was ticking the entire time. As crazy as this sounds, I believe the trucks that are more out of tolerance do better with additives, and the lesser ticks do better with viscosity. I wonder, how many different 0w40 have you tried Corey?

My truck was ticking like a whack sewing machine and the first time it went silent was on another 20 weight, so clearly viscosity isn't the issue. Corey experience was different.
The only other 0w40 I've tried was PUP 0w40 and that was years ago before they updated it to SP. That lasted almost 2000 miles before ticking again. I have not tried the SP PUP 0w40. My truck has always liked thicker oils tho so it makes sense it like the current SS 0w40.

Also, SS 5w30 made my truck sound like absolute sh it when it was SN formulation. I have videos showing how bad it sounded after a few hundred miles. I did not try the SS 0w40 when it was SN...

I just started my truck up for the first time in about a month. 0 piston slap, 0 startup rattle, 0 ticks. SS 0w40 could be a second Hemi Honey.
i know Iv said it before but it’s relevant again so.

The OUA on all oil I used in my 6.4 shows my engine shears oil viscosity pretty good. I do tow with it and a LOT more now than ever. Over 50% of my miles are towing “light” to “heavy” loads of 1,000 payloads to 10,000 on a trailer. A few times here and there i reached 15,000.

My truck had the best numbers and was the quietest with Redline. No matter the viscosity. I tried
10w40
0w40
5w30

All were amazing

NOW …
I am 4 or 5 OCI’s in using Amsoil SS 0W40. I switched when redline jacked their prices up. Truck LOVE this oil. Im at just over 98,000 miles now. I do 5,000 mile OCI’s max.

All my oily holes HAD redline in them. Even the break fluid. Now all my oily holes have Amsoil. Trans loves Amsoil too. the PC membership is worth it. I got it for a deal a few years ago if I did “Auto renewal” it was $16 a year.

Which oils did you see the most shear with on UOA's?

I have no idea what dexosR is

I'm becoming less & less interested in this ridiculous one-up specsmanship by all these different agencies. They're proliferating like flies.

The 0w30 is available at walmart to in a 5qt jug for less than 30 bucks to. Wish the x4 was but its only at autozone

I didn't see X4 on Autozone's website.

Here is the spec sheet. First time I can recall Mobil posting a typical HTHS number - EVER: 3.8

PUP0w40 was the most. It was a weak 30w after like 4,000 miles. Redline did not shear much at all. But if I remember right redline 0w40 shears the most out of all the redlines.

I also found out running too much S1 type cleaners all the time will THICKEN the oil. We anticipate it….and it happened . I took it to the extreme though and did a couple ounces in every other tank basically for the entire OCI.

They do for a few products but they are very inconsistent in their spec sheets. I wish they listed all the specs they did in the 90s

Thx, but i am curious if you know whether Amsoil SS 0W-40 shears? Have you done UOA on it?

I posted this here at the time 6 years ago but its just easier to post it again. This is the video of it how it sounded after 500 miles of the SN SS 5w30:

It was louder in person, if you were at a drive up or next to a building it was really loud. After dumping it for RL 5w30, 500 miles later it was quiet again. SS 0w40 SP has been so far keeping it quiet after 2 OCIs which was mostly towing and cold starts.
