Is it true that you get nearly no sound from the vararam? What about the s&b? I'm in the market for an intake now and like everyone else, I can't decide between the two, I love the look of the vararam but I like the sound of an intake when you get on it, I also feel like the s&b is lower maintenance. I'm not doing any drag racing and I use my 4x4 like a 4x4 so I'm torn

I've only heard good things about the S&B. If you're not going to race, then you may want to go with the S&B. From pictures, I personally like the OEM look of it.

The Vararam claims the best gains, so maybe that's for someone who wants to get everything out of their truck at track?

Definitely buy it from Matt, at Moe's!

i personally love the way my vararam woke my truck up. I went from an afe intake to the vararam and noticed a difference so that shows that they do make good power. Also what other mods are you planning on doing to your truck later down the road? that should help you decide if to get an 87mm tb or an 85tb

The Vararam is 1 of the quieter intakes on the market. It is the best performing, but it isnt going to give you that loud intake noise. The S&B will give some noise, and you can even leave the top lid off the box if you want to hear it even more.

As much as I love my S&B, I can't see how it could be as "loud" (engine intake noise) as the Vararam, which is open. If you're looking for engine nouse and the Vararam doesn't hinder you because of its open design I would go that route.

The Vararam doesnt have an open filter. The airbox for the Vararam seals off against the hood, and there is only a short 5" coupler for air to travel through, so that is why it does not produce any noise. It is actually the quietest aftermarket intake available for the 4th gens.

I'm not buying an intake simply for the sound but I want to have that sound paired with my flowmaster, im leaning towards S&B because from what I've read, it fits the best and performance gains between the vararam and S&B are minimal. And the S&B is cheaper too. after an intake i probably won't be doing any other performance mods. That's why I'm leaning towards the 85mm

You wont be dissapointed with the S&B either. Vararam does have the edge on performance, but the S&B kit is a fine piece of work. Very high quality kit for the price.

As of Monday, they were trying like hell to have these ready to ship on Friday...they told me worst case scenario, they would ship Monday. I have not spoken to them since, but I will call back this afternoon for another update. The performance gains are well worth the wait, and we are getting very close now...just a couple more days.

I dont like quoting hp/tq numvers on cold air intakes. The reason for this is because you will never get the full effect of the gains when sitting still on a dyno as apposed to actually driving on the highway.

With the Vararam, air is forced into the filter tray and then down into your throttle body. The faster you are driving the more air is being forced in there and the more hp it will make. You cant replicate that effect when sitting still on a dyno.

Same thing applies for the S&B...it pulls air from the fender and from under the truck, but you cant force cold air to those locations when sitting still on a dyno, so you will not see its full potential.

I have a Vararam on my G8 and I could tell the difference going from a different (non ram air) CAI to it on the highway. Otherwise, they're pretty similar. When Vararam quotes numbers, they're pretty accurate. They put a lot of work into these intakes and don't just toss a pipe and filter on. They TEST them. Since I've been on the G8 forums literally since their inception, I got to watch the Vararam go from beta to finished product on a members car that was lucky enough to live in Vararams back yard.

They do their homework and would be my choice again!

Luckily, I am in Vararam's backyard and have seen a truck drop .3 off his 1/4 mile by switching from a K&N to a Vararam. They claim a 30hp gain which I dont expect anyone to see while sitting on a dyno, but the real world performance gains while the truck is moving is easily a 30hp gain. It takes a good jump in power to knock .3 off a 1/4 mile time, so I would definately stand behind those numbers.

+1 I actually had a Vararam on order from Matt, then I saw an S&B in person and changed my order to an S&B.
