Excellent then we can see first hand if the purple coolant changes color to pink/orange over time or with temp change. That plus my truck we'll have two examples of what happens with this coolant as it ages.

Perfect! 2 different “controls”. May the best man stay purple......!!

Ok that was stupid.. i know. I know. :emotions33::buttkick:

My truck is a 2013 1500 Hemi with a build date of 12/12. My owner's manual states that it has the OAT 10year/150000 mile Purple coolant. Everything I've seen says that 2013+ Rams have the OAT coolant from the factory. Yesterday I put a 190* thermostat in and I was going to do a mini flush but when I poured the 10 year OAT coolant into a cup and put it next to what came out of my truck, it looks completely different. My trucks coolant is pink/orange and the OAT coolant from the gallon I have is purple. So either my OAT coolant has changed color to orange, or my truck got HOAT coolant (which is orange) from the factory because it has such an early build date.

Went to my dealer yesterday to hopefully clear it up and they were little help. I showed the parts guy the pic of the orange/pink coolant from my truck and the purple OAT coolant from the Mopar 10year coolant gallon I have and he didn't have a clue. He asked a tech that took one look at it and said "oh yeah that's the 5 year HOAT coolant". Their computer said that my truck calls for OAT coolant not HOAT. I ended up buying a gallon of the HOAT and poured some out next to the coolant that came out of my truck and they look identical.

So this is when it gets confusing. I brought this up on the Synthetic Oil thread and one member showed pics of his wife's Challenger coolant changing from purple to orange and another posted some links about the early OAT coolant being orange. You can't mix OAT and HOAT coolant because it creates a sludge that can clog everything up.

My dilemma now is do I take a chance and put the purple OAT coolant in and hope that what's in my truck is OAT or do I put the HOAT coolant in because it's the same color? If it is OAT that's in my truck that's changed color and I put HOAT in, it will sludge up. However if my truck is a unicorn and has HOAT and I out OAT coolant in it will sludge as well. Coolant shouldn't be this complicated. Any help or pics would be greatly appreciated!

Here's a video explaining the differences :

I recommend you use whatever type is in the vehicle at this time. The Orange (68048953AB, 100,000 mile/5-year) and the Purple (68163848AB or 68163849AB, 150,000 mile/10-year) are not compatible. You can go to a dealer and give them the vehicle VIN number to determine what coolant was shipped from the factory.

Best regards,
Dusty

Here's the old thermostat. Looks pretty good for being 5 years old imo. Also for anyone who wants to go a little cooler but not as extreme as 180* here's the part number for the thermostat I put in.19e0ef2f5839644cd8550916591fc339.jpg533fd6045a9855a85fc73b777204a2bf.jpgf736672814390c3c41c3788ae88c60da.jpg

They will water flush it. Or ill rais hell.
You better stand by and watch ...I'd say most dealer techs will do a half ass drain and then pour in whatever they are told ..

Good luck !

I told them im staying to watch. I hope they know how serious i am. And when they drive it to “burp” it..... im going to be driving.

And if they dont want to use water. Thats fine. They can flush it with lots of coolant.

That t stat change is definitely pink, which I say it an off shoot of the purple. What it isn't is orange, as in not at all. I think the pink is some faded form of the purple for whatever reason, but orange requires yellow as the mix, neither purple or pink does. It could be the blue gets stripped from the red making the pink. But there is no way for purple to get to orange w/o yellow. The only way for that to happen is if the base was orange and then dyed purple somehow, and when stripped the orange appeared. Next to impossible imo. Pink is diluted red, if you strip blue you can see how this could happen. But how could purple in anyway become orange w/o adding yellow?

Does anyone with the 2014 plus have orange coolant from factory?

What it appears to me, you have a truck that was built for OAT but they put in HOAT. That is kinda what I am say'n, HOAT can probably go into a OAT application w/o issue, even though the reverse is not the case. Corey I think we used to talk about that back in the day, a few of the guys who were supposed to have purp had orange.
My 14 Rma is absolutely Orange ...I mean NO DOUBT ORANGE ....but I have added RMI-25 3 ea times , which is greenish YELLOW !!! NOW this makes sense on the color chart .

My trucks OAT FF of purple Coolant is most definitely Orange by adding RMI -25 3ea times so far ...my trucks OAT does not turn puple while hot because of this .

My wife's 16 Challengers OAT FF Coolant still turns Purple when hot and changes to PINKISH orange when cold because I've only poured the Yellowish green RMI-25 in her car once so far at about 11k ( now 13,500 ... I suspect with more RMI-25 Her cars coolant will eventually stop turning PURPLE when hot and continue to be less pink and more Orange in time as I do plan to put more RMI-25 each year .

Thanks BBB for clearing this up for me Sir !!

So after my truck is flushed can I add the RMI-25 right away to fresh coolant or should I wait to put it in?

Pour it in with confidence right away Sir , just know it will accelerate the pinkish Orange color turning process ....
