Uh, Italy is way bigger than you think lol. According to the googles, if it were a US state, it would be the 5th largest. We were there a week and went through three tanks of gas. Even parked the car for two days and strictly used the train. Everything is so expensive there, it hurts. The trip ended up costing us 4 times as much as we expected. Bye bye Whipple fund, again. :(

I've ran 87 Shell for 3 years and consistently gotten around 14.8mpg. I recently ran 2 tanks of 93 octane ($85 per tank!) and was babying the throttle around town and only getting 14.0 mpg. Not too happy about that but I could feel a slight power gain. I mainly flushed the tank with higher octane because of the Edge Pulsar I installed last night. There is not much of a savings going down to 89 octane but I may do that if I'm not running on setting 8. In the winter I will go back to 87 unless it's going to be unsafe. If I keep my foot out of it, the engine should not be harmed running in 8, I like the throttle response in that mode.

Pretty sure it wants mid grade 89+ ? Pretty much all high performance motors require 89 from mopar, some even higher.

I mistyped....89 as the manual reads.

I edited and corrected my mistake.

Manual for a 2015 5.7 says 87 acceptable and 89 recommended. I run 87 all the time and get average of 20.5mpg. It's my daily driver and I put 50+ miles a day on it. 87 is just fine for a stock engine and will not blow up your truck in the future.

I’ve put 100 unleaded in mine before. Just a few gallons. The ricer in me loves the smell of race gas and makes people heads turn when they smell it coming from my truck.

Manual states recommended 89, (not required), so since day one I've used 87. I'm usually feathering the throttle anyway trying to maximize efficiency. If I was a stop light racer with a tune it would get higher octane but for a relaxing commuter and grocery getter, I chug along in the right lane enjoying my time behind the wheel usually playing a game of counting cars that do not use turn signals.

Lol. I usually try to guess which driver doesn't have insurance.... And it's pretty damn high due to my neighborhood... Lol

My truck came pre-modded as well, first thing I did when I got it was flash it back to the stock tune. I tried 87 octane for a few weeks before reading that Mopar recommends 89 for Hemi. I switched to 89, loaded up the "Regular" canned tune from the programmer and have seen a 2MPG increase in my average fuel economy vs stock & 87.

There is a premium canned tune available on the programmer, but as high test gas is something like $3.25/gal around here I'll pass on that. This thing has plenty sufficient power as it is.

All that being said, my wife's grandfather is a retired mechanic, GM service adviser and private shop owner. His words of wisdom to me years ago were this... "10.0:1 compression or better, run higher octane gas" ... now modern engine computers can detect knock and pull timing to compensate for lower octane gas, but that doesn't mean its good for the engine in the long run and you aren't going to see full performance or efficiency either.

Bottom line, the manufacturer has a staff of highly educated and highly paid professional engineers... if they recommend a certain octane there is logic behind that reasoning. You may not completely comprehend their thinking, but believe that they know more than you do and aren't just out to have you give the gas company more of your hard earned money for no reason.

The manual also states 87 acceptable. Haven't noticed a difference between the two. If I was towing, certainly would use 89.

89 just like the 5.7 Hemi calls for. :)
The manual also states that it's perfectly fine to run 87 in the 5.7 Hemi.

I run 87 Top Tier. I have noticed no difference in MPG or performance/feel when I tried 89. With a tune this might be different, but stock, I can't justify the price difference.

Well this is my two cents worth I know this will cause great debate but here goes anyway! In my area all 87 octane fuel has ethanol in it and the majority of 89 octane does also there are a few stations around that has 89 non-ethanol but for the most part 91 is the only non-ethanol fuel available I will not use ethanol fuel in anything period. ethanol fuel is terrible for your engine and it's components it leaves higher carbon deposits on your injectors and through out the entire system, ethanol is also a moisture attractant so it brings more water into the system any anybody living in cold brutal winter climates know that water in your fuel tank is not a good thing. I personally get 3-4 miles per gallon better mileage, and I know that does not offset that added cost of the fuel but knowing that I'm not putting the impurities through my engine and avoiding the trip to the dealer to get a decarbonization far out weighs the cost, My son is a tech for a dealership and tells me of the crap he sees all related to the poor quality of fuels available today, so again this is just my two cents and my opinion and my prerogative to ensure my RAM performs to its maximum performance for years to come.

None. Only way your going to take advantage of 91 octane is with a tuner that adjusts ignition timing and fuel trims

You are 100% correct.

Someone stated the book calls for 89. Now on my third Mo Par. All three "books" state recommend 89 octane but 87 is OK. The only way a person might tell the difference, since "the book" states 87 OK, is on a dyno. I have tried the "experiment" of the two octanes on all three vehicles over the same route we travel too often, Dallas to south Florida, the average MPG has never changed.

On the rare occasions I can find 100% gasoline, yes, then the MPG will go up a little. If 100% gasoline is not available buy top tier with max of 10% ethanol. The reason for top tier is supposed to contain better cleaning additives and probably more sure of the ethanol content.

I am sure the loss of hp is very small running 87 and cant be felt be the seat of the pants.

I myself dont like to run the minimum requirements on fuel, oil or anything for that matter so I will just spend the extra on 89.
