Went and got my magnaflow y pipe installed today. Was charged 75 bucks and the guy did a awesome job! I was reading some other threads before I did it that said that their truck was quieter after the install... well mine is a good bit louder and sounds awesome! I won't be able to say for sure if there is a huge difference in performance as it was 72 degrees when I dropped the truck off and 100 when I picked it up but it definitely sounds and feels like it's breathing a lot better. A great cheap mod and definitely recommended for anyone on the fence!

For a newb to exhaust considerations, what does this accomplish? I don't have factory duals, is this something my truck could benefit from?

I just got mine done Wednesday and glad it only cost me $35 because after looking inside the factory y pipe I can't see where the improvement really is. The volume between the two is the same. Just because the factory pipe is compressed on both y ends, the volume is not affected as the tubing simply becomes elongated. My muffler shop guy said the same thing. I noticed no difference in tone or performance but the power of suggestion is a powerful thing.

I suppose a decent analogy would be taking a Pringles can and squeezing it halfway crushed, if you cut open the other end and blew through it the resistance would be about the same. Make sense?

A better analogy would be to take a bottle full of water and squeeze it. What happens to the volume capacity of the bottle? It decreases. Same goes with air.

The factory Y goes from 2 1/4 down to 1 1/2 on each side and is horribly restrictive, not only that it is flattened down when it crosses under the trans. Blowing through a pringles can is a great analogy. If you blow through the open end toward the squeezed end it's a lot more restrictive than blowing through it if it wasnt crushed. Mine is a lot louder now. So much so that even my girlfriend asked what I did to it.

Oh and there's been gen 3 guys(same factory Y design) that dyno'd 8rwhp more from just the Y pipe install.... I'll spend 100 bucks for 8rwhp.

Here's mine. As you can see I removed the part that flattens down and crossed under the trans and moved it back a little.

the flowmaster y pipe looks like it would be even better than the magnaflo y pipe. Thinking bout gettin one installed soon. The muffler shop doesn't carry the flowmaster y pipe tho and they will sell me the magnaflo and install it for $65. Not sure what i want to do yet

I'm also on the fence. It doesn't matter how crushed the inlet it, it's still a 3" outlet no matter if OE or aftermarket. If it flows slightly better on the inlet, both inlet pipes are eventually shrunk down to one 3" outlet. I look at it like a funnel. You can pour water/oil/etc. in as fast as you want, but it will only flow so much on the other end. Just my theory....

Yeah, I can understand your thinking on the y-pipe but it's about compression of air not, a liquid. I'm pushing more air through the y-pipe with the mids not crushed thereby creating higher velocity into the 3"by compression, like venturi. thus increasing scavenging effect at the heads pulling more exhaust gases out, bringing more charged air into the cylinders.

Well said Hemi-express! If the funnel theory was true all anyone would do is put a catback on and leave it at that and headers and mid pipe wouldn't matter... I can tell you mine was noticeably louder when I changed it and I would put money on it gained some hp. Even if just a couple I would pay do have it done again and will on any other rams I own.

What about the dynoed HP numbers that someone posted up? Can anyone actually verify a gain with this?

Im talking about a before and after dyno with just the Y pipe replaced tho. Im sure with all the other mods you mentioned, youd have an increase.

Yeah I'm not sure if I would just do the Y pipe and be done with modding, but if your planning on doing any of the mods I mentioned before then this would definitely be a great piece to the puzzle.
