So the lifter curse finally got my old trusty 5.7. Was able to get 204000 out of the old engine before it finally started showing the tall tale sign of lifters. Was heading to work one morning and cylinder 7 died and that shortly after that I lost 8 and 5. When I pulled the top end apart, it look like a metal grinder was in my motor. So I did the only logical thing and got a 392 from mmx.

Congrats on the purchase! One thing id recommend is getting an oil cooler. These engines run the oil really hot.

Thank you. Going to be a little bit before it’s done. Got to balance engine with work and family. Do you have any suggestions for oil coolers?

I Second the oil cooler. When I did mine the oil temps were really hot. I grabbed a sandwich block from improved racing and put a 12x20 cooler in front of my rad and Havnt had an issue.

Was your oil cooler build posted? I remember seeing someone's build but forget the poster. After doing my latest oil change I hate the location of the filter. It's such a mess everytime that the remote filter will be the way I go. I just need to source a place to build a proper bracket.

Nice! Which exact engine did you buy, and what options? Please keep us posted, and some pics too. My 5.7 is running fabulous, but making a little noise. I fully anticipate a new engine at some point.
Good luck with the project....... :happy160:

I bought the normal 392 with the mds. I might not like the system but that is the only way the wife would let me do this. She is convinced that it will save a bunch of fuel. The 5.7 was a fantastic motor and I consider myself lucky to get as many miles as I did before it finally went. I didn’t take it easy on that motor either, but just kept up regular maintenance. I’ll get some pics when I get home tomorrow, but the motor is already sitting in the truck I just need to start piecing her back together.

This is it before I put it in. I did get shorty headers to put on it. Eventually I want to throw on the long tubes but unfortunately they weren’t in the budget. I’m also running the stock intake manifold from the 5.7. I will build on to it more in the future but the whole goal right now is just to get my girl running again.

I got an HP tuner through mmx along with a tuning agreement. I just make a back of file of the trucks original tune and sent it over to their tuner and he made a tune for the pcm and sent it back to me. I have the tune ready on the HP app ready to go into the truck

Take your time. Be meticulous. You don't want to forget anything..............

You did some SERIOUS removal of front end components. but made it nice and easy to get at everything. I like that. :smoke2:

I have been checking over everything as I go triple checking torque specs and all. I got most of it done over the weekend but just had to do the accessories. Also who ever designed the flange location for the exhaust is a sob.

I like that, leaving the hood on. Always create more damage taking it off. Removing the front end is the best way to go. Good luck.

Removing the front end made a huge difference, though I was cussing the fact I put one of those bambi basher bumpers on the front. It also made mating the engine and trans together a lot easier. I would have pulled the trans with the motor, but I was doing this myself so I wasn’t comfortable about getting them back in by myself. I left the hood on not only to keep it from getting damaged but also the rain here as been terrible so I kept it on to keep everything undercover and somewhat dry

I got her started today and what a feeling that was to hear it come to life. So I figured I might encounter some things and I did. My harmonic balancer is bad which I was not aware of until I looked at the motor to make sure everything was turning and saw it wobbling. I have a new one that is going to be here first thing in the morning. Also my headers have a slight leak in them which I’m pretty sure I know exactly which head bolt it is, but other than those 2 things, the motor is healthy. Once I get those taken care of I just need to reassemble the front end and enjoy the truck. I will post up a clip of her running once I get those 2 issues fixed the front end reassembled which should be tomorrow

You're a fast worker! :happy160:
I wish I could have taken more time to clean up the engine bay and do a few other things but unfortunately I need my truck back up and driving asap. The local law is starting to get a little aggravated that I keep driving my 18 wheeler home.
