2015 ram 1500 Lifter failure… dreaded

The way I know a repair is going to be a success after a time of trial, is after I submit a blood sacrifice from some part of my body, usually fingers, hand, arm, or all three.

I would 100% agree. Torque wrench slipped off head bolt… snap on socket snap on torque wrench… crap happens, tried to cut off my thumb. Picture was 4 hours after the fact. Tomorrow is just radiator, coolant and oil. I will video first start up.

Truck is fully back together, no Ticky Ticky or drippy drippy!! Just the sweet sound of Mopar injectors. I held gas pedal to the floor and pressed the button to prime the oil pump just incase it lost prime from sitting open for so long.

Hardly any clatter on start up, I’m thinking the adequate assembly lube and soaking the lifters prior to install along with pouring oil over everything once it was installed helped.

No dummy lights on the dash drove it down my driveway and back (300yrds) once it was up to temp all seemed well.

Truck held 2.5 gallons of coolant and it was all I had so I need to order more before I take it on a long drive. Also have to put one heat shield on and the front cowling but that’s pretty quick.

I put fresh oil and a filter in it but I plan on changing the oil pretty quick maybe just a few miles just to ensure all the coolant and debrie is out of the oil pan and system.

That is excellent.

Good about doing a couple short interval oil changes, always good and not too cost-prohibitive.

Thank you sir. My thoughts exactly. For what it’s worth when the hot idle tick started to happen I put seafoam in it to see if that would help (far shot, I know, but nothing to lose at that point) drained that oil after probably 20 miles or so and put new filter and oil. Maybe another 3 miles and the tick became a chirp and was running like crap (no codes though). Anyways that oil filter I cut open today, holy moly the amount of fine metal shavings was insane. Also to note, no glint in the oil itself or the VVT solenoid. Oil filter did its job. I’m sure the crankshaft bearings didn’t enjoy it too much but….

When rebuilding I pumped about 3 quarts of oil and atf mix through all the journals and the front of the pan near the oil pump, with an open oil pan plug (still no glint in the oil)

A quick couple oil changes for piece of mind is cheap and easy. I’ll let everyone know how everything goes once I put some real miles on it. Planning on taking it to the office on Wednesday which is 120 miles round trip. Pray for me :)

You talked me into it. Lol. Idc if yall see my license plate number but is it a concern on public videos? I’ve never understood that… people hide it in post and pictures.?


I mean honestly I have 3 neighbors. We shoot PRC matches together, I pity the A-hole that comes down our gravel road with wrong intentions, but the thought is still there :)

As to the license plate, pretty much every person who ever walked past your truck while it was sitting in the parking lot at Home Depot, was able to see your license plate. I wouldn't sweat it.

Thanks man! It was a lot of work but overall not that bad.

I only use bright yellow microfibers to plug things, too big to get lost and too bright to not see them lol

Alright guys, just wanted to kind of wrap this thread up with maybe the last update.

I cut open the original filter that was on during the failure. Holy glint! The drain oil looked fine but the filter has a silver dust, nothing large enough to make me concerned but definitely quite a bit in there.

As mentioned I put fresh oil and a fresh filter, this is after the rebuild. Prior to the new parts I had pumped about 5 quarts through the whole system, oil galleys, lifter journals, in the cam opening, through the front of the pan. Borescoped the pickup screen and stuck a magnet down into the pan just to be safe. All checked good.

Fast forward. I put about 15 miles on it, topped off coolant and it runs great. Took the time to evac the ac refrigerant and replace with new since I had cracked it open on accident (whoops). Changed the oil tonight… I know it was sooner than I originally planned but oil is cheap and the thought of one of those small pieces of metal plugging one of the new lifters got the best of me. Plus I wanted to make sure no coolant was getting into the oil via poorly installed head gasket or such. Oil looked great. Cut the filter open and holy moly more metal dust, quite a bit again.
It’s very fine more of a powder than anything but just goes to show even with a good flushing that stuff gets everywhere and I’m glad I did a quick change. I’ll probably do another one just for piece of mind in the next 100 miles or so.

Another tidbit for the inquiring minds. I started getting paranoid that I hadn’t properly torqued the crankshaft bolt but could figure out a way to hold the balancer from rotating. I wasn’t going to buy the tool, mainly because every video I’ve seen the balancer on these has different holes for utilizing. I ended up shoving both ends of a pair of channel locks into the holes, stuck a pry bar between the channel locks and the other end against the frame and torqued that bolt down with a snap on torque wrench to 130 ft lbs. (per Haynes manual). Im happy now, the air gun had me worried, probably was fine but the engineer side of me said “by the book idiot” lol.

Maybe I’m a lowes guy. Heck maybe I’m an ACE hardware guy, ACE is acceptable the day after pay day. A week after payday Home Depot and two weeks after payday it’s lowes lol

Alright guys, truck has been driving great. But I have noticed my coolant temps seem to be running higher than they used to.

When I did the rebuild I replaced the thermostat with a gates. The water pump seemed fine, no play on the impeller so I reused it.

Fast forward outside temps have been in the high 70’s to low 80’s.

When I first hop on the freeway I get up to 208 or 210 then I’m assuming the shutters open because it drops to like 199. The problem is when I’ve been driving 20 miles or so on the highway it gets up to 212 and pretty much stays there but it does go all the way up to 221 at times then cools back down and keeps repeating that. Idling in stop and go traffic it sits at 204-208.

I burped the system with a funnel and the water pump vent, radiator is full and so is the overflow. Used mopar coolant and the electric fans are coming on.

Should I be concerned? If my memory serves I don’t think I ever saw my coolant temps get above 206 or so even when towing.

Your thoughts? What do your trucks run?

Did you check your new thermostats operation,before installing it,just cause it's new doesn't mean it's any good these days.If your old thermostat was still working good,i'd re-install it.Being in Cali,you could probably even get away with using 797 Performances thermostat delete.
