I was wondering about that.

I have several different lapping compounds:

Permatex in a small tube
Clover 220 grit silicon carbide grease type.
Clover 400 grit silicon carbide grease type
Some Clover dry that you mix with a little oil, it breaks down finer as you use it.

Is one more suited than the others?
Start with the 220,and finish it off with the 400,i don't know if i'd worry about going any finer then the 400

You're gonna be proud Ed,finally got around to taking some pic's of the heads today, lol.
We're stalled for now waiting on headers,so we didn't get the heads cleaned up till today.
Just so you know,i was mumbling under my breath " That Damn Ed,he's making me do more work then i normally do,trying to keep up to him" :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh:

Damn. That's pretty.

Those would make a beautiful coffee table.

Edit: yea, like these

I got the first part of my order today.

8 exhaust valves and 3 intake valves. Came from Little Rock, AR. My Rockers and 4 intake valves left Chicago, and are due tomorrow.

Get this: the cam bolt, injector o-rings, and exhaust manifold gaskets left Atlanta, GA yesterday morning, but are not due to arrive until Tuesday.

Makes no earthly sense at all.

When I was 15, I was visiting my Brother in Detroit, who worked at a dealership body shop. One day, he took me to a buddies house, the guy had a complete 402 rat motor, sitting on a coffee table in all it's glory. He had a hood hanging on the wall with an airbushed naked lady on it, etc.

Good ole gasket remover and some wire brushing, followed up with a good dousing of engine degreaser, then a trip through the local carwash cleaned them up pretty good. The heads had horrible casting alignment on the exhaust ports so i spent about an hour and half with a dremel and sanding roll cleaning up the casting lines on the exhaust, but i never removed the valves so it was just on the outer opening of the ports. The pass head i think had to have been cast on a Friday or Monday,as it had about a 1/16" misalignment, between the top half and bottom halves of the head. The intake side on both heads was good though

Actually, UPS.

USPS is usually pretty good, most priority mail parcels arrive in 2-3 days.

Now the UPS tracking update says delivery tomorrow. We'll see.

Must've took a little detour......lol
My last order from Rockauto was the opposite
FedEx & UPS arrived in 2-3 days
USPS was 4
Maybe it's a Georgia thing......USPS was from there

Ed did you run a tap through the head bolt holes to clean out the threads, usually it's not a bad idea, the bigger bolts use a slightly oddball M12x 1.5 tap,if i remember right the smaller holes are M8X1.25.You need a long tap for the bigger holes,as they're sunk into the block a fair ways

Here's a video for consideration. Country boy that knows his stuff.

This one doesn't go deep into one of the other lifter failure causes, such as, the rocker arm bushings wearing, causing excess oill leakage around the shaft, resulting in a decreased oil feed to the lifter, but does explain a lot, and the oiling failures of the HEMI.

No, Rick, I did not.

I did blow them out with compressed air. Not sure if I have a tap to fit those threads or even one that's long enough.

I will blow them out again and run a bolt down them before I install the heads to make sure they're clear.

I've posted that video several times, and usually post this one with it.The 2 are pretty decent when watched together.

I figured someone had posted the video before, but wasn't sure. Since I suffer from a good case of CRS (can't remember sheet), I posted it just in case.

I've been watching a few videos on the Hurricane engine tonight. I may could be convinced to like it if it also had port injection with the direct injection, or just port injection alone.

If the vehicles I have now will hold up as I hope, I should never have to worry about owning a direct injection. My truck hasn't been started in well over a week now, and the wife's car has had maybe 5 miles put on it over the same time.

So, what's the concensus on using blue loctite on the cam, crank, and head bolts?

I did not see any evidence of it having been used on any of these bolts, and I did not use any on the first cam bolt that I will be replacing after I remove the cam phaser and run a brush into the lifter oil galleys.

I'm gonna take a look at the service manual again, but I've already seen it lists 3 different torque specs.for the cam phaser bolt (63, 72, and 90 ft-lbs.)

I torqued the first cam bolt to 90 ft-lbs., btw.

I definately dont want to cause issues with changing torque values due to lubricity.

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to do it right.

Thanks

I usually use a bit of blue on the cam and crank bolts, but nothing on the head bolts.I wouldn't worry to much about it changing the torque values on either the cam or crank bolt, still use 90 and 130 on them

Good to know, Rick. Thank you.

Do you use just a 1/4" dot on the threads near the end of the bolt, or go all the way around on 2 or 3 threads? Let it dry first as well?

I had heard before about using a very small bit of oil on head bolts, but that was a different engine, too.

BTW, my lifters are still soaking (2 weeks +) in WalMart Supertech 5w-30......lol
