Front Differential

So I had a boot tear and thought I’d be proactive and have the garage that did my lift do the cv shaft. Apparently they pickle forked the extension on the passenger side and screwed it up, but it gets better. The part they messed up you can just get plug and play so now they are getting a used diff since you can’t buy parts separate. What did they screw up doing that the dealer wouldn’t have had a problem with? They said the shaft was welded on and the couldn’t hammer it off pickle forked but we see where that got us. Any info would be appreciated as I wish I never would have let them touch it.

Yup those Gen 4 front diff are trash. And Dodge are ********* and only want to sell you a complete diff...

the oring failed and let water into the splines of the pass. cv shaft, that caused it to rust itself together. if you dig you can find someone who will sell you just the pass. side housing that bolts to the diff.

Yep just went through all that, 2 hubs, two shafts and differential with labor 4800$
axle boots were gone so seized up, axles were so stuck in spline that output shafts were damaged when they were removed so resulted in differential being replaced. My warranty forever just covered the hubs because they were sealed units which saved me 850$, the rest due to lack of maintenance, RUST, warranty wouldn't cover.

Reason for posting is I was looking at a 22 Laramie and the CARFX showed front differential replaced at 24,000 miles. Then the owner apparently sold it.

Differential is not covered under the original powertrain warranty. This is from the RAM 2022 warranty book.Here is a link to the online book below.

Ouch! You could have swapped a solid axle for that. For 5 g's I would have went with a king pin axle SAS. Just in case someone else is searching this, something to consider.

Ram Forum SAS, places like Facebook market place and Craigslist and pick and pulls usually have plenty of options for used king pins from 1,000 to 2500 bucks. Can even use another manu so long as you have welding skills like this guy. I'm sure even finding a power wagons axle you will still need fabrication as it is a 2500. All day long used ones are $2500 and aren't very old. Kind Pins are nice as they have no parts that fail. Our 1500 front suspension is so weak I am a little surprised more don't fail, perhaps our trucks generally aren't used like the trucks of yesterday were used. But before I spit 5 g's on replacing a weak az front clip, I'm gonna put anything there that is stronger. Do it once, do it right, if you plan on keeping it. It would be horrifying to have 5 g's in a weak front and have it fail again? You put a king pin there your truck will long be dead 5 times over before it fails, then you take it off and sell it for more then you paid for it.

The only downside, they aren't as smooth on the road.

Seems like it would state that...right? I need to call a service department to clarify...but I'm scared of that Laramie. Seems funny the owner sold it at that point. Sat at the dealer for a month before it was repaired, then went to auction.

I'm pretty sure you guys would have no trouble adopting Alberta and Saskatchewan,as we've been getting royally screwed by Ottawa for years,lol.But we might want to be the 51st and 52nd,just to be differant
