Got the tick!

Finally happened to me. 2015 Laramie 4x4 crew cab with 60,000 miles. Planned on changing the bolts next month but now looks like I'm going to have to do some drilling or welding. I did my research and looks like I need to talk to Moe's to get my stuff. But I wanted to get some opinions from you guys first who have had this problem and change it out to Shorty's. I've heard the JBA have had rust problems after a couple years even with the ceramic coating. Going to go ahead and get the stage 8 bolts, but I've seen some people use the retaining clips and some don't. Also going to get the rim Flex gaskets.
My biggest question is for the people that had the bolts broken off into the head, how did you go about getting them out? A seems like most broke flush with the head. Did you guys use the screw extractor bits or the welding a nut trick?

If you’re good with a drill and trust yourself to keep it straight and not drill into your block I’d say drill them out.

Use an extractor like in this link: https://store.snapon.com/MultiSpline-Extractors-1-8-Multispline-Extractor-P635483.aspx.

I work on airplanes for a living and have to extract corroded/rusted hardware like it’s going out of style. These are the only extractors we use and are hands down the best.

They fit a 1/2 socket so you can put a ratchet on them for more torque and easily pull them out

Nice. May be something I purchase depending on the depth of the stud. Just as easy as drilling a pilot hole then attach this and counterclockwise turn it to extract?

Definitely worth it. They are $8 on the snap on truck and as you see cheap online too. And yes. Drill the correct pilot size hole as deep as you can, insert extractor and turn counter clockwise

True hemi tic comes from internal engine noise. It is been argued over and over what actually makes the noise but it is there all the time.

You just have a broken exhaust manifold bolts.

The real question I guess would be, would you guys use the extractor over welding a nut?

Welding a nut to the broken stud is by far the easiest and in my opinion best way to do it. With drilling you have to be pretty straight and centred and even then it can be a pain to get out, and if you go to far you’ll hit a water jacket.

If you can post a video that would be helpful. But typically with the broken exhaust manifold bolts you will hear it on Cold Start in the morning, not 10 minutes after driving.
You can crawl under your truck and give the exhaust manifold heat shields and tug, if their loose you have broken manifold bolts.
If your hearing the tick tick tick after the engine is good and warm you Have the real Hemi Tick.
What oil you running? What oil weight? What's your oil change interval?

UH, isn't broken exhaust bolts still under the 100K warranty?
Got one side of mine done, under warranty, with 80K miles on it.
new manifold and everything.
Got to make an appointment for the other side b4 i hit 100K.

when my bolts broke the tick was gone after it got warm. I have the hemi tick but I could definitely tell the difference between the 2.

Its bad at cold start up till about 10to15mins of driving.
At start up you can give a little gas and hear it get louder and speed up. I doubt I'm covered under warranty, but I guess I could always try

Mobil 1 full synthetic energy 5ish. I'll give the shield a tug in the morning

Powertrain warranty is 5yr/100K on 2015 and older models. 5yr/60K on 2016 and newer.

My 2016 came with 10y / 100k miles.

You may have a lifter tick if you can still hear it 10 minutes later. Manifold leak tick usually goes away as soon as the truck warms up (30-90 seconds), depending how warped the manifold is. I had the same issue around 42k miles and it was covered under warranty.
