I've got a 2014 1500 Laramie with 5.7/A8 trans w/133k miles. I'm having issues with nasty lifter noise that I believe is MDS. No noise at start up but after I fuel up and restart I have horrible lifter knocking until I get out on the highway and set the cruise. Then it goes away. I'm assuming its the MDS solenoids sticking causing the lifter to collapse. I'm thinking of trying a tuner to shut off MDS. Does anyone know if the DiabloSport i3 has a function to disable it? It was one of the least expensive options I found, but not sure if the standard tuner has the option or if I have to buy a program for it. I drive 86 miles each way to work (mostly 65-70mph zones). I can't afford to be chasing gremlins. I'm also thinking I need to stock up on lifters, cam, retainers, locks, springs, gaskets etc. so I can be prepared when the lifter fail completely.
Thanks for your time,
Sam C.

Sorry to hear it, the name for it is hemi tick for your search. Most are causes by lifters or exhaust, it actually sounds like it is possible you have exhaust. No CEL's? Have you run codes? what oil do you use?

Use the ERS and shift to 8. That will turn off MDS and allow you to determine if the noise is caused by MDS.

Does anyone know if turning off MDS for extended periods might create more problems then you're trying to cure? JMO but if you're constantly turning it off by the switches on steering wheel that the bleed off passages will eventually be clogged by old sludgy oil. Now if you turn it off by a tune, never to be ran agin it wouldn't make any difference. Personally I just leave mine alone and let it do its thing, I do turn it off occasionally just to see the difference but other than that I just leave it alone.

I'm pretty sure it is MDS related. When I start it up in the morning, it's quiet (as much as normal) then when I shut it off at the gas station, I hear a loud click noise (sounds like a solenoid). When I restart after fueling up it will have the loud tick until I get out on the highway for a mile or two then it goes away. Temperature doesn't seem to affect it. It only does it after restarts. I've experienced exhaust leaks and this doesn't sound like an exhaust leak. It's almost as loud as rod knock but it seems to be coming from valvetrain. I have started switching to manual mode on trans to shut off MDS, but I still hear the loud solenoid click sound at shut down (after short drives) and then it comes back at restart. It's fairly intermittent. Some days it doesn't happen at all, but it's getting to be almost daily now.

For oil, I was using mopar oil and filters at the dealer (free from dealer as perk of purchase) but recently switched to Valvoline synthetic (5w20) and wix filter (switched after noise started and didn't make any difference with loud noises, but quieted down regular lifter noise).

Can the MDS solenoids be pulled without pulling heads? (I have no idea where they're at on the engine). I thought about putting MDS elimator plugs and shutting off MDS with a programmer.

Oh also, no codes except one for fuel level sensor fail (it works intermittent depending on where I get fuel lol).

also, when it acts up, the engine runs rough and has less power like it's down a cylinder.

Valvoline doesn't have moly, read this. When there is a tick of some kind, you may want moly. When the ram engineers teamed up with pennzoil, they made one of the highest moly oils specifically for hemi's. If you want to run valvoline, you may want a moly substitute such as lubeguard's biotech.

Here, mds solenoid vid... Well maybe that wont help, try and check youtube...

If I put the MDS plugs in and disable system, will the MDS lifter work okay (stay in normal mode)?

Can I ask, what is a MDS plug?

You can just tune out mds, and lifter will work fine. One more video...

It replaces the solenoids but you still have to disable the MDS system with a tuning programmer (like Diablosport etc.).

Yeah, I don't know that much about it but it looks like you need those plugs to fill the holes, non MDS lifters, and turn the system off. It's not just replace the plugs and you're done.

I'm thinking if you just want to turn off the MDS that the tuner is the way to go, then if you still wind up haveing to do a cam/lifter job that is the time to do a MDS delete.
