Pulled the fuel rail this morning to check the injectors and check the spray pattern and clean. Came home from work, ate breakfast real quick. Went outside and pulled the fuel pump fuse. Went to start the truck to bleed off fuel pressure. Truck barely wanted to fire. Tells me my test the other day where the fuel pressure bled off was accurate. So, pulled the rail and started using the contraption I bought. The tester works good. The adapter that adapts the injectors to the spray can, not so much. Luckily I found the hole in the back of the injector ended up making a pretty tight seal to the spray can nozzle and just pushed the injector to the nozzle and activated the tester. I was expecting the spray patterns to be wider. Some of the injectors were still pretty dirty, even after all the cleaners and me cleaning the bottom of the them when I pulled the manifold back in early April.
I actually have some reman'd injectors showing up today. Figured I'd go that route for now and I'll spend some time and clean these originals up really good and maybe see about rebuilding them. Worst case scenario, I can always put the originals back in if these reman'd ones start giving me fits. It's easy enough to do.

This tester was less than $25 on Amazon. Seems worth the money to me.
Buy some cheap liquid injector cleaner at your local auto parts place and let them soak in it for a few days, then throw them in your ultrasonic cleaner with some fresh cleaner and let them vibrate for awhile, then run them through your cleaner again. As long as they all have the same spray pattern ,new screens and o-rings should bring them back to life as long as the pintle and seat hold pressure. They are in rough shape by the looks of it,but with a bit of time spent on them, you should be able to rejunivate them

My injectors were rather cruddy at 201k miles, but cleaned up nicely.

I found a nice metal valve stem, and drilled a small hole for the spray tube. Used Carb+Choke cleaner, and activated the injector with a 9v battery and pushbutton switch.

Damn you went all fancy with the steel valve stem Ed,i might have to update mine now after seeing yours :waytogo: :Big Laugh:
The rubber valve stem and cap i've been using probably aren't as good as your set-up

I had the rubber valve stems, but saw the metal ones at O'Reilly's and thought, "That's neat."

Glad I can help you spend your money.... :Big Laugh:

The battery and switch setup is all from you, my friend. :waytogo:

Most auto parts stores will have cheap Gumout or STP fuel injector cleaner on the shelves, that works good to let them soak in for a day or so. I usually use Carb/Choke Cleaner to clean the injectors and if they're really cruddy i'll follow it up with some Brakeclean .
There's a video in the first post that basically shows how to clean an injector. Flush them both ways.

I meant to get the parts to rebuild the injectors.

Anyway, I put the new ones in and truck immediately went way rich. Like 30+%. Turns out the reman'd injectors I got weren't reman'd. They were knock off OEM. I spent time cleaning the old ones earlier and I'm glad I did. I'm basically in the same position I was before. I didn't reset the fuel trims after it went way rich, so we'll see where it ends up again. After the ones we're back in, it started to immediately self correct. But, I still feel like i might still have an injector or 2 that's leaking.

You'll have to google rebuild kits for them, the link i have in the thread is for the car injectors, but as far as i know should also work on the truck injectors.
Injectors are 1 thing you want to buy new,as i've never seen any remans that are worth a crap.

Yeah these are going back or getting charged back for lying about what they were.

So far (knock on wood) since I've cleaned the old injectors and put them back in the truck seems to hot start better. Fuel trims still seem off at idle, but I don't have any pending codes yet at 40 miles since I've reset the CEL for excessively rich on back 1 and 2. Still early, and not a ton of miles since resetting things, but lack of pending codes so far is a good thing.

Haven't driven very far, have out a total of 53 miles on the truck since resetting the check engine light from the faulty injectors. Still nothing pending. Hot soak starts seem... Uneventful, which is a good thing. However, my idle fuel trims are still hovering near the -10% range, but leaning out to around -3% or leaner everywhere else. So, the cleaning may have fixed the leaking injector, but I may still have some issues with spray pattern at idle causing an overly rich condition. I'm going to monitor it for another day or 2 before making a decision on the next steps. Part of me says just to rebuild these injectors, but if the spray pattern is the issue, not much I can do about that ( i think).

I've decided I'm going to rebuild these injectors, so I've ordered a kit (plus some extra filters and the filter removal tool). I think once I get these apart and I can soak them for a good long while, plus hit in the ultra sonic, I think I can get them working like new again. It only takes a few minutes to pull the rail. I've thought about picking up a used set of injectors and rebuilding them, but who knows what I'd be getting.

200+ miles and so far no issues. Injector rebuild kit will be here today, but probably won't get to rebuild them until Sunday, might even push it back to next Friday as long as it's running good.

About 400 miles put on the truck today. No lights, no codes. Averaging 18.5 mpg after driving through mountains. I barely saw that mileage on flat ground when driving to key West 2 years ago... I put 400 miles on the truck after filling up, still showing about 95 miles to empty. With nearly 35s, non-aerodynamic bumper and about 50% of my miles going up and down mountains, I'll take those numbers.
