EDITED ;)
I would love to converse or slap the :poop: out of the idiot that thought the 8H70 did not need a dipstick and the other one that proceeded to put it in the chassis at the angle they did.
I am almost through with the service having the 15 step pick your nose, scratch your butt crack. Now smell /eat what you found on your finger after the previous steps but only do so in temperatures between 86 and 100 F or your nose and butt may cease to function.
OK enough sarcasm / humor.

I did go with the PPE 1 quart over pan getting it for ~$270 with shipping on my Atech (wholesale account.)
Also bought a new OEM gasket off AMZ for ~ 24.00.
I know they say one can reuse the gasket but not worth 24.00 to go through the first paragraph scenario. Went with Maxlife fluid from Wally World @ 22.00 a gallon x 2.

Didn't know which way the gasket went on but figured out the "nibs" hold it into the machined groove on the pan.
Installed the new gasket on the pan, some attention to the alignment of the holes and making sure the gasket seats properly is required. Haven't seen these two mentioned anywhere so I thought I'd throw them in. I assume the raised rib on the top of the gasket slips just inside the case/housing. In hindsight, I would've wiped a film of fluid to help it do so. Maybe next time ;) Locating the filter was not too bad but it does require firm pressure upwards on the bottom to get the filter tube in, again a little fluid may have helped.
Once in place with 2 screws holding it the remaining ones were installed finger tight. The remaining ones followed. Once all were in, following the torque pattern they were slowly tightened a few times until all were snug.
I believe the above step is critical to align the top gasket rib with the case as well as not tweaking the pan or damaging the gasket.

Again using the pattern, they were then torqued to 72 in lbs. Based on another's experience, I did remove the drain plug and found a DRY O-ring with a few small pieces of aluminum. I cleaned everything, removed and inspected the O-ring. Reinstalled with a bit of fluid on the O-ring and recess it goes into.
Next, how to get the fluid in the easily accessible opening. I found that by peeling the carpet back and drilling a 1 inch hole in the floor pan (gotta love Uni bits :hahano::hahano::hahano:) I was able to use a funnel with a hose. but then I found if I poured the fluid to fast it would splash back and make a mess. Refer to first paragraph.
OK forget the last paragraph :rotflmao::rotflmao:
I bought an extra fill /drain plug Dorman # 090-167 (18-1.5mm). Drilled and tapped it for 1/8 NPT. Using a 5/16 barbed elbow with a clear vinyl hose I now had a secure way to get the fluid in without making a flipping mess. I attached the other end of the hose to an extra 2 qt garden sprayer I had (~10.00 at wallyworld). Filled it with fluid and pumped 6.5 qts. in without spilling a drop.
Tomorrow is first paragraph day and should be done
Hopefully some of this will be helpful to another

If you’re using a drilled fill plug to pump the fluid in, how will you know when it’s full (starts draining out)?

Damn i gotta say that made me laugh in spots, but i'm also a bit curious on the drain plug/hose idea, does the clear vinyl tubing allow you to see the fluid draining back

To answer both questions:
On the tubing? yes but because the fitting is centered and above the bottom of the fill hole you will possibly lose a bit of fluid when the adapter is removed. the good part is you can easily pinch the tubing closed while transferring it to a container or drain pan.

I haven't done the pick your nose scratch your butt procedure yet but will today.
As I bought 2 gallons, and have the +1 quart pan, I'm going to put a bit over 7 quarts in, do the procedure and hope it's a bit overfull. If so, I'll sacrifice a bit of fluid to avoid having to repeat the procedure if it was low and get's outside the temp range while filling.
I would really like to kick the out of whomever was involved with approving the elimination of the dipstick and the service procedure.
When I was in engineering, I was the guy that raised hell over this type of BS. I was not always popular with some co-workers but the upper level management liked my UHH pot stirring.
I'll update when done :favorites13:

As promised, The good, the bad and the ugly
Whomever came up with the bastardization of this transmission installation in the Rams should be hung from their cajones in the middle of the Mohave desert in July.
All of the nonsense could have been avoided by moving the flipping fill hole to a higher location and OMG maybe one for cold fills after a service? NAHH that would cost almost as much as a dipstick, dipsh-t.

The Ugly: having not done this before I was unaware of the intensity of the circle jerk involved with verifying the level once filled.
I was also unaware that one should likely start the verification at the low end of the temp range as by the time one is done burning the skin off their hand and arms they will be outside the high end temperature. The placement of that fill hole and exhaust was obviously intentional by some sadistic SOB that daddy should have flushed down the toilet.

By this point you are likely aware that I thoroughly enjoyed my experience today.
So lets move onto the bad:
While getting the fluid in the trans was a breeze, removing the modified fill plug with the 90 degree elbow and hot exhaust was anything but fun. I should mention the install was easy as I used a 1/8 NPT M x F 90 and then a 1/8 NPT to hose barb and the exhaust was cold. PROBLEM: When trying to remove the assembly the hose barb interfered with a harness or something. OK reverse the installation with hot fluid and exhaust while the engine is running and the trans temp is doing what ????
I do not think anyone that is reasonably sane could have come up with a more idiotic process.
let's not forget the butt end being up 9 inches off the ground and 5 seconds in R N D followed by 5 seconds at 2000 RPM in second gear.
THIS INDIVIDUAL WAS DERANGED.
OK remove the modified plug and lose X amount of fluid as D AZ me shut the motor off while doing so. but was smart enough to install the factory while waiting for it to cool back down to the low end of the temp range for verifying the level.
Refill sprayer bottle.
Once cooled, loosen plug almost all the way.
Start motor
The Good: The bottle with the hose by itself (no fittings or modified plug worked quite well at replacing the lost fluid. took almost 2 quarts which surprised me as I did not think I had lost that much.
I may recheck at the lower end of the temp range as the fluid does expand when hot. So it may be a bit low when cold. I would rather have a bit more than a bit less
I will look tomorrow to see if a straight hose barb will clear the exhaust as that would have simplified things but then I wouldn't have had as much fun.
I'm not sure you can comprehend what I might do the the individuals involved with this design if I were able to.
But then again at the time they were owned by who?? Fix-It-Again-Tony. I can think of several meanings for FCA none of which have anything related to Chrysler.

Holy crap you had me rolling on the floor laughing, you sure you're not a comedian on the side :Big Laugh: :Big Laugh:
Welding gloves/sleeves work if you have a pair,if not,a bunch of rags soaked in water placed on the pipe will also work.
The ideal checking temp is apparently between 100F and 105F,so you want to start with as cold a transmission as possible,as it'll get to those temps pretty quick.

I've always felt the same way: Why not put a dipstick on the tranny??

I rented an Audi once which didn't have an engine dipstick. I didn't know it until the low-oil warning went off. There was a 5-step process to go in via the LCD screen menu's to see what the oil level was. I didn't think there were as many bars on the graph as there could have been ...to really give a good sense of the oil level. But it was definitely low. It took 2 quarts (diesel).

My favorite one are how everything you'd normally control in a car/truck are all done via the touch-screen in a Tesla. Except the directional ...there's a micro-toggle for that. A carload of people were burned alive locally b/c they couldn't get the (electric) doors opened in an emergency (I know some of the emergency responders). My point is, there's still a place for old-school dipsticks/button & switches ...and manual door pulls.

That's one of several reasons I'm hanging onto my 2012 Ram.

i agree 1000000%

looked at a new Hyundai for the wife and it was actually a bit ominous as most everything is a ********* screen until you start it. then everything is digital with all kinds of choices. They should offer a post graduate (purchase) program to learn all the features and how to use them. Instead you get a 700 page encyclopedia with a 300 page addendum for the they forgot and they designed the dam thing.

Give me Volume, tuning, Bass, Treble, balance/fader with roll up windows and I'm good. A/C and Cruise (maybe on the cruise)

I'll be back later today with an update. thanks for the suggestion on the gloves but my arm are heavily wrapped with heat resistant gauze and foil tape after yesterday
What a flipping fiasco. I can only hope the SOB's responsible for this burn in :flamingdevil::flamingdevil::devilfinger::devilfinger:

back with the finale.
Starting with a cold trans We did the Following:

Step 1. Start motor
Step 2. with the brakes applied, Pick your nose for 5 seconds,
Step 3. uUsing same finger scratch butt crack for 5 seconds
Step 4. Smell finger for 5 seconds.
Step 5. Proceed to scratch genital area for 5 seconds or area until aroused.
Step 6. Increase speed for 5 seconds
Step 7. Stop before --- and return to park and release brakes
Step 8. Burn the :dancingpoop:out of your arms and hands removing (BUTT?) fill plug. If dysentery is present burn yourself again putting plug back in. IF not pump fluid into orifice until it dribbles back out.
Step 9. Reinstall plug while liquid is still dribbling. be careful not to burn yourself anymore than you already have
Step 10. turn motor off and drink a 12 pack.
Enough humor
Having already gone through the D/A process But knowing I may have lost some fluid while trying to get the fill fittings out and plug back in I decided to repeat the entire Circle Jerk (I hate being the pivot man) :emotions122::emotions122:.

After doing so with the trans at 95 degrees the B plug was removed with no sign of dysentery.
having the pump filled and ready I proceeded to fill with just the hose and that actually worked pretty well. Probably took a little over a pint. Reinstalled B plug and I'm calling it good.
Hindsight being 20/ 20 a straight hose barb would have likely worked better.
And if I knew beforehand what I know now it would have gone a lot easier. But still a test of ones sanity. I can't even imagine trying this laying on ones back but likely would have done so in my younger days.
A few pic's for anyone attempting this delusional process :hahano::hahano::Moon::Moon::pp::pp::Pshyco::Pshyco:

here's a few, Bought the car on Super bowl Sunday 1983 and slowly redid the car doing major improvements to it every winter. Having always been a Mopar guy it has a 340 / 727. I pretty much did everything except the upholstery, exhaust, and front end alignment.
Some day I'd like to get back to it being a hobby but with 5 acres and at 70 yo it seems there is always something to do, like buying a 2014 RAM and proceeding to try and learn about that which I knew NOTHING about :emotions122::emotions122::roflsquared::happy160:

This FORUM has been a great help and I hope to become a contributory member as much as I can
