The same thing happen me 4 times the first 600 miles (first week I owned it). Yes my seat belt was on, yes the door was closed and no the parking brake was not on. I took it to the dealer and they couldn’t duplicate it and there were no codes. The dealer told me if it happens again, bring it back. If it happens again, I will record it like this guy did.

Hi Musky Mike,
We understand how concerning this must be. Please send us a private message once you decide to have your dealer look into this again as we would like to have this documented and looked into further.

Looks like some sort of transmission issue. Like low fluid or something.

Hello Lydia,

If it happens again, I’ll let you know. I have a good dealer, and he told me if it happens again, bring it right in (if driveable) or call them for a tow truck. I just wanted to post it to find out if it has happened to other owners and what the dealer did to repair it. Thank you for looking into it.

It happened again today (5th time) and I recorded it until after 5 or 6 cycles between P, R and D then it finally went into Drive. I was close by the dealer, so I stopped in and showed them the recording. They took it in and ran it on the computer and there were no faults. They checked for software updates, TSBs etc and Ram has nothing listed for this problem. They said they don't know what to do to repair it and I need to wait for it to happen to more 2019 Rams and Ram issue a repair. So for now, I'm waiting. Has anyone else had the problem?

My 17 wouldn't come out of park and it turned out to be a problem in the harness to the brake pedal. Different gen, but still a hemi and 8spd with dial so I doubt its a much different design. No code because it just thought I was trying to take it out of park without applying the brake.

The Service adviser is sending the recording I made of the malfunction to the Ram tech. If this happens to anyone else, record it and insist your Service adviser sends it to Ram for review.

Update:
The Service adviser sent my video and the video from YouTube to the Ram Tech Adviser and he agreed something is wrong. I received an email today saying the Ram Tech adviser is sending the videos to Ram engineering for review.

This is a reach, but if this happens again and you have a passenger with you, have them see if the brake lights are all on when this is happening and you press the brake.

I’ll be keeping an eye on this thread... I have a 3 week old ‘19 w Hemi which I love everything about. However, I am more or less having same problem as you. It seems daily that I shift from P into D and the truck does nothing- engine revs, but it isn’t in gear. It has been as easy fix- just turn engine off and in again and switch into D and it goes- no lurching or anything like that... Abtyslly today I took a video- would do nothing on D, but when I switched to R it was fine... if I weren’t so obsessed with this thing, I’d probably not think twice about it.. but fact is, something is wrong if I put it into D and it doesn’t go... and come to think of it, this has only happened when the tru j has idled for a while- yesterday was at car wash watching it bring dried and talking to a guy about how nice it is... get in truck and wouldn’t move until I stopped and started again! Thanks!

Send the recording to the dealer service adviser and ask them to send it to Ram. We need these videos to get to Ram so they can see what is happening, I would have dealer check out your truck so there is a service record for the malfunction. The more videos Ram sees, the more they will realize there is a problem.

Sounds like an electronic issue to me , as in the trucks computer is not seeing one of the parameters the trucks computer is looking for to make a shift to drive at that exact moment [emoji848][emoji848]

At a minimum I'd check the fluid level [emoji106]

Checking the fluid level in the 8 speed isn't a simple dipstick check at temperature like a normal / reasonable xsmn fluid level check , it's a 9+ step process , it's simple but silly imo [emoji16]
I'll post a video of it from the Motor City Mechanic if I can find it .

Good luck !

Found it , remember to watch both part #1 & part #2 and it's very important to have the xsmn pan rail LEVEL meaning the back of the truck will be higher than the front [emoji106]

More of these problems on 5thgenrams forum. Hope Ram steps up and issues a TSB for it. It won't let me post a link to it. Dealers have been replacing the valve body and if they can't get a valve body, they replace the transmission.

Hello all, new here.

I came here looking for a thread on this exact issue. I bought mine yesterday. Upon leaving my driveway for the first time, i put it in D and nothing. Checked to make sure the parking brake wasnt set, mentally going through a list of things - all the while my girlfriend is going through and taking about settings in the center display - instead of putting it back in park and trying again, i decided to give it slight throttle to see if the brakes were somehow engaged. It shot out of the driveway like it had a line lock. Scared the **** out of both of us.

I'll make sure to post a video is it happens again, but this is surely a severe safety issue.

If it’s safe, take a video and show the dealer and ask them to send it FCA. I think it’s a tight tolerance in one of the electronic valves in the valve body. Mine did it 6 times before 1200 miles and hasn’t done it the last 1000 miles.

I has tranny issues with previous cars and normally its an electric or fluid issue.
Question for those affected - What was the temperature outside when the truck would shift into dive? Maybe some lines were frozen or the electronics doesnt like the cold??

Mine has had the problem from ~30-65 degrees.
