Because you will need to replace the factory ECU for one that is modified on Rams after 2014. No tuner seems to be able to unlock the factory one. So when your buying a tuner for a 16 you get a programmer and new ECU.

Like said above, the factory PCM is locked on the 2015+ trucks. This means that you need the tuner and an unlocked PCM in order to use the tuner. You can save yourself a few dollars by sending your PCM in to Diablo to be unlocked, but then you dont have a stock one to fall back on in the event of needing warranty work done on your brand new truck.

You know I thought about doing this and just swapping back to the stock PCM when I went to the dealer but when I was there a few weeks ago to get my the oil changed the guy checking in my truck plugged in a OBD2 port cable that was hooked to his tablet and read the miles and everything from there.. That blew my mind and makes me much more nervous to tune my truck now..

The good news is I am illiterate when it comes to cars and truck, if they ever quuestion me as far as i am concerned they have a problem with equipment "PMC what ? Sir, I afraid may you need to put a new one in as it is obviously not recording the miles correctly ?
Are you sure your instrument is reading correctly ? "

After I read your post, I decided to test this. Guys have said many times that they are worried about the mileage being off when going back to the stock PCM, but I have yet to hear from a single customer that has had any issue with this at the dealer. I just made a run to our local dealership to pick up some gears for stock, and I put my stock PCM back in just so that they could check it. My buddy in the service dept hooked the computer up to my truck, and the mileage read identical to what is shown on my speedometer.

I am not in the least bit worried about my warranty when putting the stock PCM back in.

The plot thickens. So, where is the mileage stored if the stock PCM shows the correct mileage that's on Your odometer?

The stock one that's locked cannot be changed and will never count anything. It's as simple as a couple plugs and nuts and the PCM is back to stock for a dealer visit.
