So I installed the Vararam Air Grabber and looked inside the throttle body....
I see why everyone is installing some sort of catch can. I bought the truck 2 months ago with 75k on it, totally stock. other then taking the throttle body and intake off what would be the "best" fuel additive cleaner to use?
Catch can will be the next mod... thanks for any help.

Yes a catch can is definitely a must on these trucks for sure. As far as fuel additive, I occasionally run a octane booster when I question the quality of the gas I have gotten (truck seems a little sluggish etc). The only one I have actually been able to see/feel a difference is the NOS octane booster. It actually does work I think. No other booster I have ever tried could I tell anything. But every time I have run the NOS stuff it actually makes a difference. I read that TORCO (I think that's what it's called) is supposed to have the same stuff as the NOS. I don't normally like additives but I do run them every now and then. Try it and see if you like it. I do not sell any products so I am only giving my recommendation because I see a difference.

An octane booster isn't going to do anything to clean your TB. Really, all they do is lighten your wallet. Additional octane does not = more power. Higher octane gas is harder to ignite. The higher the compression, the higher octane required, lower octane can ignite on compression instead of spark, causing knocking. We should be running 89 or 87 in our trucks. Anything greater is a waste of money.

If you want to clean your TB, Seafoam is your best bet. 1/2 a can through the TB using a vacuum hose and 1/2 a can in the tanks.

I knew this would start a " octane boosters suck" post from someone. I am saying that I can actually tell a difference with the NOS boosters. EVERY time I have run it I could feel a difference. I run a 93 octane Hemifever tune, so 87 or 89 is NOT gonna do it in my truck. If I have inferior fuel in my truck I am sure it doesn't run like it is supposed to. And the NOS does make a difference. I agree that almost all of the additives like that are snake oil. But not NOS. Sorry, it does work. And he didn't ask about what to clean his TB with, he asked about fuel additives. That's why I brought up the NOS. Not to clean his TB. He already had cleaned it like he said. Let's not turn this into a "bashing session" all I did was give my opinion (based on MY experience with MY truck), with my tune, with my bad gas I get sometimes. I guess I need to run a log on my Trinity next time it isn't running top notch and then do one immediately afterward with some NOS in it and see if it was pulling timing or fuel or whatever due to some slight knock? I will do that and see if there is a difference.

Also, I am interested in this Seafoam in the vacuum hose thing. I have read only one post about that and I really would like to have more info on tha.

The local shop that keeps up the maintenance on our work vehicles, they give them a "Fuel Induction" cleaning with a product called BG. I have seen the before and after of this product and I was completely amazed by the difference.

Instead of a catch can you can put a 10$ filter from autozone in the same spot and just change it out every 15,000-20,000 miles instead of check it every 1,000 miles.

Oddly enough, when I read the OP's post, it said " what would be the "best" fuel additive cleaner to use?" and Coop's advice on Seafoam seemed to be informative and helpful.

Even though our trucks recommend mid grade fuel. My MPG increases when I put premium. And that's me trying to be as consistent as possible in my driving habits.

That's going toward fuel grade will make no difference. Well, It does in mine. Can't wait for a full custom 93 tune

OP, Seafoam is one of the best over the counter products for cleaning the intake and throttle body.

Instead of a catch can you can put a 10$ filter from autozone in the same spot and just change it out every 15,000-20,000 miles instead of check it every 1,000 miles.

Downside to this is you're not using the intake's vacuum to pull vapors out of the crankcase now. Yes you're not building pressure in the crankcase because it's vented to atmosphere but you're also not removing the vapors. Not removing the vapors can reduce the life and condition of your oil, but if you're a guy that swaps it out every 3000 miles then it's not an issue compared to those of us the go for extended drain durations with analysis.

I found this out as well. Wasn't really getting great mileage with mid and then one sleepy morning put in '93. Better performance in throttle response, of course, but amazingly i'm getting between .8 and 1.2mpg better than '89. Not a major improvement but noticeable still.

Thanks guys, I actually just picked up some techtron.
What "filter" could be installed instead of catch can?
As for the Seafoam ( i've used in my bike) I suppose some use of a in-line injection device could be used.

does your MPG increase actually make it cost less to drive? higher grade fuel costs more $$ so does the dollar per mile actually cost less.. or the same....

Example: $50 to drive 250km is 0.20 per mile. but at 56$ to drive 280km is also 0.20 per mile...

Just saying higher grade gets better miles per gallon. but when the gallon price is divided into the miles driven does the cost actually work out? ive never tried to prove it either way. I run 89 in my truck just because the 87 where i am in canada is pure **** most of the time. with 10% ethanol at most stations.

Fuel cleaner will do nothing for your intake--its a fuel injected engine. Use brake cleaner NOT throttle body cleaner if you remove the TB for cleaning.

If you used a filter instead of a catch can, what kind of filter and what/where are the hoses you connect it to?

My 2 cents but from a different angle.... I don't care about mpg... its a truck....my concern is the life of the engine.... will a catch can increase the life of the engine?.... I'm planning on keeping my truck for a long time... so I want what's best for the engine.... if I worried about mpg... I would have bought a dart..lol

Bran. I would like to know also what filter you are using. In-line fuel filter? Wont the oil just plug it up?
