I wanted the Cummins ISB 4.5 made in Rocky Mount NC, but the Italian wouldn't go for it.
Ifn Chrysler hadn't gone bankrupt, pretty sure it'd be in Ram 1500. Dodge people loved Cummins and were very protective of the brand. They were not happy he forced VM diesel down their throats.
First, I 100% agree on the 4.5. I will say, though, that VM does make some good engines of their own, BUT remember the disastrous ecodiesel is the afterbirth of a GM project, and nobody, but nobody can eff up a diesel engine like GM, hence "rotating mass failures".

So that Chevy is an inline 4, lol. I have to look into that more, if nothing else interesting, 310 hp.

Towing and hauling capabilities aren't too shabby, either. Depending on drive and cab configuration, the four-cylinder Silverado, along with an eight-speed automatic transmission, can pull up to 7,200 pounds with a max payload of 2,280 pounds.

The torque is over 400 lb/ft on the 2022 models (just updated) and it is now rated to pull more than my truck with the 3.21. It's rated north of 9000 pounds and yes that payload means it can pull a decent trailer.

But, would you? Would you want to wind a little 4 banger up that tight??

I would have a hard time paying money to upgrade to a turbo, but for a base engine it blows the 3.6 pentastar out of the water in both MPG, and towing power.

If I am being honest, those early 90's f150's look better and better day by day. I might have to get one and park it for a while.

I should add, MDS is not related to lifter/cam issues, we see those same issues on non mds engines, so let's not include the weaknesses of the hemi's non mds related in our considerations. That didn't take long to get a hate it with a passion vote :)
Slow speed driving with my exhaust is noticeable, just put it in 8th gear. Highway speeds, makes a big difference on gas mileage glad I have it.

My mom gets the same mpg with her turbo 4 silverado as my hemi. 20 mpg. Hers sounds cool though with the turbski noises lol

Mine is tick free and has 3.92s. None of the stuff that so many people here seem to agonize over have detracted from my experience over nearly 10 years now in the slightest. I suspect the vast majority of users never notice the MDS, but enthusiasts need something to enthuse over, both good and bad.

I don't for a second think our trucks would be cheaper without MDS. Chrysler & Co don't say "well, we make enough money, let's lower the prices" when their costs go down. NAFTA didn't make trucks cheaper when they moved a lot of plants to Mexico for the reduced rate, don't kid yourself that reduced costs to the manufacturer trickle down to consumers. I would also suggest the cost per unit is essentially negligible. Take a look at the "incentives" to not have features now due to the chip shortage. Ford is giving you a $50 rebate to not have stop/start. It's something like $100 for not having active grill shutters, IIRC. Wow. That's going to be the tipping point on a $50k truck...
Yep most folks do not even know what mds is or if it kicks in or not. Only if you go to a louder exhaust would you ever know. It works f8ne for me in my 5 different trucks. Only one who did not have it was my Rumble Bee!!

so again why a turbo 4 ???? What a waste..

You have to be careful when comparing different drivers in different trucks with different engines and driving styles.

The truth is, the turbo will completely outperform (in terms of mpg) any v8 in the city, and still do better than the v8 on the highway. Put the same driver in equivalent GM trucks and swap out the 2.7 for the 5.3 or (worse) 6.2 and you'll see at least 5 to 8 mpg better in the city and guys are getting 25 mpg+ on the highway too. So it's mpg "strength" over the v8 is definitely city driving, but if you're careful it will still beat any v8 on the highway too.

It's not supposed to be a replacement for a v8. It's supposed to replace the v6 as a base engine, you get the 5.3/6.2 as an upgrade. So as a base engine, it really makes sense and outperforms the old chevy 4.3 in every way; city/highway MPG, hp, torque, tow rating.

The fact that we're comparing it to the hemi at all, and finding it pretty closely matched is impressive. It destroys the base 3.6 pentastar.

Durability/longevity..... that is the real question.

mds hemi and pentastar didnt even make the list rop 12 gas mileage trucks, ram eco diesel second bast in gas class... Did usa today rank these wrong? where does the mds hemi land on this list? If you are gonna shut down 4 of my cylinders, you best make it in the top ten of gas mileage trucks? Look at the full size trucks killing it with mileage over the small trucks, lol??

12 Trucks With the Best Gas Mileage in 2021:

  • 2021 Honda Ridgeline: Combined MPG: 21 | $36,490 | USN Overall Score: N/A

  • 2021 Chevrolet Silverado Duramax: Combined MPG: 27 | $42,690 | USN Overall Score: 8.0/10

Comparing diesels to gas? Go buy a diesel. Then you can complain about the emissions equipment. And the cost of diesel fuel. And the maintenance costs of diesel. And when that **** with the Ridgeline parks in front of the only diesel pump at the station and then goes in for a latte.

Comparing hybrids? Go buy a hybrid. Then you can complain about the complexity. And the battery lifespan. And the stop/start feature.

Comparing a Ridgeline? Go buy a Ridgeline. Then you can complain about your elevated estrogen levels and desire to wear skinny jeans while you block the only diesel pump at the station as you go get your latte.

I dont think ridgline owners mind their cylinder deactivation system, probably suits the skinny jean wearing crowd, however it appears that hemi owners don't prefer it. maybe it is the loose jeans that makes us different, nothing but 569 levi's for this guy, shorts too. I sure would like this truck a lot better w/o this mds garbage hanging on it, just like the majority here.
