Somebody stole my cat. What's my replacement options?

Truck in my signature below. 3/4 ton, straight cab, 8' box, hemi. Yep. Somebody came onto our shop property and cut the freaking cat right out a few months ago. Cops couldn't do anything but take a report.

Well our plow season is coming up and it's time to get it fixed. WOW is this cat expensive! I was wondering if anybody had a take off or would know a good place to get one on the cheap.

That or maybe even if there was a cat delete kit or exhaust (not just a cat back because I have no cat now) that would have me covered all the way back.

It's a single exhaust truck. We live in Upstate NY.

Dang. I suspect mine got tossed when I cleaned up after the engine swap since I deleted them. I woulda sent one to you for the cost of shipping. Can't believe I let that happen....

As I understand NY is picky about replacement cats so OEM is your only option. Removing it is likely not an option for the same reason.

Your local salvage yard can hook you up for less than 1/2 a new one.......in NC.....not sure about NY

"It is unlawful for any person to sell, offer for sale, advertise, or install any used, recycled, or salvaged catalytic converter on any vehicle in NYS. This prohibition, under subdivision 218-7.2(c)(2) (leaves DEC website), applies to all vehicle types and model years."

Last I heard, the fine for doing so for a shop or salvage yard is around $10,000 USD.

I'd be calling salvage yards in PA or NJ or even OH. Try to get one complete system, unbolt what's left of yours, bolt up the replacement and go.

Nice dealer profit protection law they have in NY. If they are concerned about emissions shouldn't they just measure them? If you meet emissions standard, what difference does it make where the cat came from since it is doing its job? Sheesh.

It might be covered by your comprehensive or property insurance. Of course they will raise your rate for making a claim so you pay one way or the other.

Another cat or switch to a dog or fish this time. Sounds like probably cheaper to take a drive out of state to buy and install a used one, but time is money so paying the extra for a new one may be the cheapest route as a business. Delete is easy enough, but being commercial you'll likely fail inspection. So many assholes that will steal anything given the opportunity in this world.
