Hmm , this may just be the fuel injectors ?Yeah, Im not 100% sure when mine started or if maybe it was always there. Bought the truck in October, didnt really drive it with windows down because it was cool out.
Had first oil change done by dealer at 2K miles around Feb, in went PYB 5W-20. About 5K miles I changed out the PYB for PUP 5W-30. Somewhere before the 5K mile change I noticed the tick, but it also coincided with better weather and driving with windows down. Brought it right to dealer and was told its internal exhaust noise, its as "normal" as it can be and not fixable.
Cold, warm and hot starts are fine..no noise. Idling is fine, you really only hear the fuel injectors and maybe accessories (A/C compressor, etc). Starting to accelerate, even on flat ground, you can hear the ticking. It seems to get quieter as the oil gets hotter, it surely does NOT get worse with hot oil, but even with the oil at 220 you can still hear it, especially in areas where there is something to bounce the noise off of. After about 2K RPM you cant hear it....not sure it just stops or if engine/exhaust noise drowns it out. BTW listening to YouTube videos of Hemi tick, this is NOT that...its quite like a sewing machine - the pitch is way too high to be something like bearings, rods, etc. For all I know it is actually the fuel injectors but Im not positive about that.
The PUP has been in for about 600 miles, so maybe it just needs some more time. Yesterday I swapped out 2 quarts of 5W-30 for 2 quarts of 0W-40 in hopes the extra moly will help. Also using the upsized RP filter....have checked my oil level a bunch of times per the manual (wait 10 minutes after turning off the truck) and its perfect: right at the top dot on the dipstick, so even with the larger filter my oil level should be good. Unless somehow a bad filter is the issue?
BTW my oil pressures are about what they used to be on FF and PYB - 60 psi cold, 32-34 psi idling in drive.
So far the engine seemed quietest on factory fill and PYB, but again it could have been noisy and I just didnt hear it. PYB would probably be a great solution but I cant really use it during our winters (I dont drive long distances so it never really burns off any condensation).
Next step is RL 5W-30, I just dont know how long (or even IF) I want to wait and see if it gets any better on the PUP stuff.
I'd definitely give the added PUP 0W-40 oil some time at least a few tanks of gas [emoji1303]
I'm all for going with 5W-30 Redline [emoji16] but the 30 wt + 40 wt PUP mix you have is a GREAT oil combo for sure ! The 40wt PUP has a decent amount of Molybdenum .
Good luck Sir and keep us informed here [emoji1303]
