Yeah, Im not 100% sure when mine started or if maybe it was always there. Bought the truck in October, didnt really drive it with windows down because it was cool out.

Had first oil change done by dealer at 2K miles around Feb, in went PYB 5W-20. About 5K miles I changed out the PYB for PUP 5W-30. Somewhere before the 5K mile change I noticed the tick, but it also coincided with better weather and driving with windows down. Brought it right to dealer and was told its internal exhaust noise, its as "normal" as it can be and not fixable.

Cold, warm and hot starts are fine..no noise. Idling is fine, you really only hear the fuel injectors and maybe accessories (A/C compressor, etc). Starting to accelerate, even on flat ground, you can hear the ticking. It seems to get quieter as the oil gets hotter, it surely does NOT get worse with hot oil, but even with the oil at 220 you can still hear it, especially in areas where there is something to bounce the noise off of. After about 2K RPM you cant hear it....not sure it just stops or if engine/exhaust noise drowns it out. BTW listening to YouTube videos of Hemi tick, this is NOT that...its quite like a sewing machine - the pitch is way too high to be something like bearings, rods, etc. For all I know it is actually the fuel injectors but Im not positive about that.

The PUP has been in for about 600 miles, so maybe it just needs some more time. Yesterday I swapped out 2 quarts of 5W-30 for 2 quarts of 0W-40 in hopes the extra moly will help. Also using the upsized RP filter....have checked my oil level a bunch of times per the manual (wait 10 minutes after turning off the truck) and its perfect: right at the top dot on the dipstick, so even with the larger filter my oil level should be good. Unless somehow a bad filter is the issue?

BTW my oil pressures are about what they used to be on FF and PYB - 60 psi cold, 32-34 psi idling in drive.

So far the engine seemed quietest on factory fill and PYB, but again it could have been noisy and I just didnt hear it. PYB would probably be a great solution but I cant really use it during our winters (I dont drive long distances so it never really burns off any condensation).

Next step is RL 5W-30, I just dont know how long (or even IF) I want to wait and see if it gets any better on the PUP stuff.
Hmm , this may just be the fuel injectors ?

I'd definitely give the added PUP 0W-40 oil some time at least a few tanks of gas [emoji1303]
I'm all for going with 5W-30 Redline [emoji16] but the 30 wt + 40 wt PUP mix you have is a GREAT oil combo for sure ! The 40wt PUP has a decent amount of Molybdenum .

Good luck Sir and keep us informed here [emoji1303]

To the techs point regarding tick. My 03 5.7 has no injector tick. Never has. My 2018 6.4 clearly has injector tick. My self and my retired line mechanic friend have spent a lot of time trying to pin point the exhaust leak in the 6.4. In doing so we have used engine stethoscopes and rubber tubes. The injectors clearly make a firing tick. The valve train makes a low well oiled sewing machine noise. Mild and I find it to be normal. An exhaust leak will have a screech/hiss sound until it seals. Not trying to split hairs. But in our truck club some Ram 6.4 and 5.7 owners thought/think they had hemi tick. Have been able to show that they are hearing the injectors. Interestingly, depending who the injector vendor was,,,some are quite.

Im holding out hope that it is in fact injectors (or something else not oil related) but man does it get on my nerves. I keep wondering if the factory fill was able to keep the noise down that non-ff oils arent (granted, factory fill is rumored to be Pennzoil Gold, which PUP should be better than).

Makes me wonder if the "new" moly isnt as good as traditional moly, for our Hemis. RL has a ton of moly which leads us to believe its the traditional, non-tri-nuclear moly. PYB and Pennzoil Gold have the same traditional stuff. PUP (and I think PP) have such low levels, everyone assumes its tri-nuclear.

So after my first oil change I went from whatever the factory uses to royal purple 5w20. My truck started developing a tick that wasn’t there before. So I threw in some Lucas oil stabilizer (about 1/4 of a bottle) and that seemed to help out. This was about 1 month ago. I ordered some redline from amazon as no one here locally sells redline. As soon as it gets here Monday I’m draining the royal purple out and putting in the redline 5w30 I hope my engine gets back to the way it use to be.

No doubt you can tell the difference! I can definitely hear a little piston slap in the bottom end with the Amsoil vs the Redline. It's only been two days/65 miles since I switched over to the Redline 5W30 and I got to admit there is a huge difference between it and the PUP 5W20 I was running as far as quietness is concerned. Everytime I cranked her I had to sit there for a minute and marvel and the sweet sounds that she made. Definitely made a believer out of me and its supposed to get even quieter than it is now? It was damn near a come to Jesus moment!

Same experience in my 03 5.7. Noticed that the more I drive it and RL goes thru the lubrication cycle, the quieter and smoother it runs. With 230K on this engine I was just starting to hear a mild bottom end rotating noise. RL 5-30 eliminated that in 108* weather. I believe Amsoil is a Tier 1 oil. Just ran a bit thin in my vehicles.

First thing, if your truck is still under warranty I recommend taking it to the dealer. Hopefully they will take care of it and even if they don't, at the very least it will be documented. If they essentially blow you off like they did to me, continue reading.

For some of us the 5.7 Hemi is a nice smooth running engine with any oil we put in it. For others the 5.7 Hemi has a pretty loud ticking sound either on startup or after its completely warmed up. Not to be confused with a broken exhaust manifold bolt(s), this is a metal on metal tick that comes from the internals of the engine, most likely from the lifters although that's never been proven 100%.

My truck developed a loud tick at a fully warmed up idle around 2500 miles when I drained out Pennzoil Conventional (PYB) 5w20 and put in Pennzoil Platinum (PP) 5w20. The motor sounded horrible, you literally could hear all the metal components hitting against each other. It was simply awful sounding. Now I believe PP is a fantastic oil, it just didn't agree with my Hemi. Over the next few years I tried many different oils including (PYB) 5w20, Pennzoil Ultra Platinum (PUP) 5w20, Amsoil OE 5w20, Amsoil SS 5w20 and 5w30, Redline 5w20/5w30/0w30, Mopar 5w20 from the dealer which is either PYB or Pennzoil Gold. The only two oils that made a difference were PYB 5w20 which somewhat quieted it up, and Redline 5w30 which made the ticking all but disappear. For a complete list of the oil changes I did up until the summer of 2017 check this post out:
Oil list

After taking my truck to the dealer 3 times and 3 times being told it was "normal Hemi noise" I had kind of given up. It was either live with it ticking like it was going to grenade or find my own answers. After reading through the Synthetic Oil thread on here, I decided to give Redline oil a shot because it has been said on this forum that it quiets Hemi's and also on other forums that it quiets many different engines. I figured there was nothing to lose except some money.

First I tried Redline 5w20. It helped but it was still there. Then I tried Redline 0w30 because at the time I was nervous about running a 30 weight oil in an engine that was spec-ed by the manufacturer for 5w20. 5w20 vs 5w30 is a whole other discussion, long story short, you can run a Xw30 oil in a 5.7 Hemi with absolutely no MDS problems and no codes thrown. This has been proven many times. Anyways 0w30 made it quieter than Redline 5w20, but the ticking was still there at hot idle.

I also tried mixing PUP 4 quarts of 5w30 and and 3 quarts of 0w40 PUP SRT 0w40 (which has a good amount of molybdenum). I ran that for 3300 miles before it started ticking again so the quieting ability didn't last. It did however produce very low wear metals which is important to note.

Then I tried Redline 5w30. I gave it a good 500+ miles for the additional molybdenum that is in Redline oil to plate to all high contact surfaces in the engine. I realize it sounds too good to be true but here's a video documenting how quiet my truck is on Redline 5w30. Pay particular attention from 39 seconds to 1:03.

After finding an oil that actually quiets my Hemi up I decided to try another top shelf oil, Amsoil Signature Series (SS) 5w30. It can be had for much cheaper than Redline and its a damn good oil. So I poured some Amsoil SS 5w30 in my Hemi and started driving it. 500 miles in, it started developing the dreaded hot idle tick again.

This is what it sounded like when I put PP 5w20 in it, except it was easily twice as loud. If I went through a drive thru I would have to shut the truck off to be able to hear anything. It was that bad. Keep in mind the dealer told me on 3 different occasions that it was normal for it sound like that.
I ended up draining out the SS 5w30 and put Redline 5w30 back in. I only have about 100 miles on that oil so its still a little loud but not as loud as it was on SS 5w30.

Let me reiterate, I believe PP and SS are great oils. Many people run them in 5.7s with great results. I run SS 0w20 in my wifes 2017 Jeep GC 3.6 and it runs very smooth and quiet. I am not employed by or sponsored by Red Line Oil, I'm just running it because it works.Other oils that may or may not quiet a Hemi are Schaeffers and Motul. Both have high molybdenum. But as I found out, simply having an oil with high molybdenum such as Amsoil SS doesn't necessarily mean its going to quiet your Hemi.

So if you have a ticking Hemi give Redline 5w30 a shot. If you're worried about running a 5w30 in your 5.7, try Redline 5w20. It has worked for some, but didn't quiet mine up as much as Redline 5w30. When I get 500+ miles on my current Redline 5w30 fill I will take another video to document how quiet it is.

Hope this helps someone else out there quiet their noisy Hemi.

That second video was Exactly how my Hot idle Hemi tick sounded like in my 2013 5.7. I always felt to was more profound on the bottom end of the engine as it seemed to be on yours also. The difference between those videos made me a believer.

Mine has always ticked only at startup, and only after sitting for a few days. When started every day, no tick on dino mopar 5w20 the dealer puts in. But I may change to redline 5W30 after reading this

When my 2013 was new it was whisper quite, after 60k of hard driven miles it sounded just like the second video. Horrible hot idle tick. So there is a good chance you will develop the tick over time.

Dang, all this talk is making me want to change my '16 Reb's oil now even though it has another 1K or so to go before the next OCI!

Welcome to the club, again and over and over it is the same thing and it isn't about brand but science of the formula. It just so happens to be very few options if you want high hths ester/pao based oil with high aw/ep additives. This oil makes a difference in these hemi's. This is why we keep bothering to say this ****, because another guy will be helped by this and another and another. It is eye opening how changing your oil brand can kill hemi tick, trust me I am still amazed and I believe I was the first one to have this happen in his hemi and reported it. I hope the people who are doubters or call me oil jesus and other derogatory things pay attention to the shear number of ram forum members who have killed their tick with this oil. Yet again the group of us is happy to have had yet another success story.

So I swapped out the royal purple for some redline today and wow what a difference. I went from RP 5-20 to redline 5-30. Definitely a difference in the way my engine sounds now. Looks like I will be sticking to redline from here on out.

Lots of people just don't get it , but once you hear and feel the difference it's an awesome feeling [emoji1303]
Give it time and it even gets smoother .

Excellent choice of oil Sir !

We praise Royal Purple here all the time .....HOLEY CRAP ...NOT FOR THEIR OIL !!!!!!!? ROYAL PURPLE OIL IS TERIBLE !!!! .......

W e do love the RP filters ....
RP 10-48 & the Larger one I prefer. RP 20-820 ...
The RP FILTER tested best in class in a filter test ..... basically head & shoulders above the rest ....
There are other filters that are nearly just as good .... splitting hairs .....but the RP Filter was the BEST !!

Unfortunately the ROYAL PURPLE OILS in pretty much ALL categories. Was JUNK ...

UNDERSTAND this : oil companies change their formulas often .
Keeping in touch with these changes could save you 4-7$$k on a cam & lifter repair ...

Hope this helps !
