Great post Sir !

My truck was just a LOUD Engine imo on whatever was in it from the factory and the free dealer oil changes . I've used Redline oils for over 20 years in most everything I've owned and have always had great results , so naturally after the free dealer oil changes I went to Redline 5W-30 and my 5.7 L Hemi is like a different engine just butter smooth and quiet as a church mouse ...even at a drive through !
I tried Redline 0W - 40 mixed 50/50 with Redline 5W-30 and had the same quiet and smooth results . I'm now using Redline 10W -30 as it has a bit more Molybdenum, zinc and phophorus , I'm liking the 10W-30 so far , but I'll probably just end up with the 5W-30 year round in my 14 Ram .

My wife's 16 Challenger is super quiet and smooth on Redline 5W-30 as well .

Obviously neither have any mds issues as this BS has been proven many times it's not an issue to run a 30 wt oil in these engines .
Many folks including myself have ran 40 wt oil with zero MDS issues .

Great post Hemi , looks like you've found your oil Sir ! [emoji1303][emoji1303]

My 14 sport has that hot tick now. Never noticed it before. I did have a right rear manifold bolt break. Dealer fixed. It's back again on startup. Truck has 116000 mi.
I've been running 5-20 full synthetic. I've recently switch all fluids over to redlion. All diffs, and now tranny to except for engine oil.
Would it better to go with redline 5-20 or 5-30, since it has high miles. I also tow alot and travel at high interstate speeds.

How long has redline been in engine and is it still ticking? What filter are you using as well. Oil full on dip stick? Yes 5w30 has been proven the best in the lineup for the 5.7 for tick. Interstate speeds and redline mix really really well, good time heat and pressure to quiet loud spots.

I haven't switched the engine oil over as of yet. Everything else is switched to redlion thus far.
I currently use...Wix filter, 5w 20 valoline full synthetic. But I also use the BG products oil additive called MOA. Also before last oil change I used the BG....epr (engine performance restorer) pour in and run it at idle for 10-15 min. Then drain old oil.
Is there a particular filter used to help with tick while using redlion 5w 30?

Royal Purple or Amsoil ea filters have imo been proven by many things from tests, youtubes, forum members reviews to be the best choice. I cut a couple open at 14 months and 2 years, yes 2 years, and the filter was like new as being pliable and not stiff like paper ones get after 3 mos. Again, that is an opinion so take that with a grain of salt. Wix XP I would say is a good choice as well as fram ultra. I think royal purple filters are on sale from to website. You can save ten bucks by buying a case, this is the larger filter and is an option for your 2014.

I like that, I think we should change the name to redlion.

5W-30 Redline coupled with the RP 10-48 Filter imo ..[emoji106][emoji106]

Just for the record in this thread, it seams 5w30 is good for 5.7 and 5w40 is good for 6.4 engine according to some of the 6.4 hemi owners, now other redlines are good as well, but as you can see not as good as 5w30.

10w30 redline had a tick.. Fast forward to end, you see even with throttle and long wait it is still ticking.

5w30 redline doesn't get any smoother. Both have same filter, RP 20-820.

Just got a new to me 2013 5.7 Hemi Ram Laramie 4x4. Just heard the tick for the first time, pretty loud and a bit unnerving as I hadn't seen any posts about til today. I've got 73k on the clock and 2k until the next oil change. Should I go ahead and get it done now or is it something that will not damage the motor?

If you could post Before and After videos we all would be greatly appreciated. Best place to get audio/video is from under one side of the truck.
What oil and oil weight are you using now?

Eh RedLine 20 for me.. last thing you wanna do it you have any type of warranty work done is to have them test the weight of the oil and see it’s not the recommended weight. Plus I don’t see how the thicker viscosity would get in to the small nicks and crannies that 20w does, hence why it’s recommended from the engineers, but OKAY to use 30w if can’t find 20w. Same with gas it’s recommended to use 89 but it’s OKAY if u can’t find 89 to use 87. To each his own. I’m too dumb to be an engineer so I listen to them hah

Didn't change the oil yet. Last night I added a bit of Lucas Oil Stabilizer to the oil....stopped it in it's tracks. Didn't get a video of it, but if it shows back up I will. I'll either go with the Redline 5w30 or the custom mix, not sure yet. Got the Lucas fix from a search on Hemi Tick in the Challenger Forums. One member said it worked in both his truck and the car. Also a couple of Jeep guys talked about it. Definitely a short term thing for me though. I want the better oil in the truck.

All that is is a oil thickener basically. PUP 0W40 works well for some and ends up being near a decent 30 weight after it sheers down a little if you want to stay with an oil that officially meets FCA specs. I've run both in my 5.7 along with other 0W40's and RL 5W30 keeps the tick away pretty much for an entire OCI. Any of the 0W40's have it coming back by 4k-5k and PP or PUP 5W30 always had it coming back by 2-3k.

I know what it is and while it does do more than just thicken oil, it's not the final answer by any stretch. I will be using the custom blend in 5w30 or Redline in the same viscosity as it seems to work for most of the trucks in this forum that use it. As much as I drive [35k per year], I'll be changing much more often than 10k miles. Probably at 5k OCI.

I'd say this, whatever kills the tick is a good idea assuming not clorinated parriffins, but the higher quality things are a better choice and should be tried first. The viscosity at operating temp is 110, see here pdf. So operating viscosity of 5w20 goes to around 9, and 30 weight goes a little past twelve, so your lucas is ten times thicker then 5w20 and then some, make it over twelve times thicker then 20 weight. So does that still sound like a good idea? The heaviest gear oil you can get is 250w, and it has a cSt or operating temp of 28, so you are adding something 4 times thicker then dragster gear fluid to your engine. Lucas would be the last thing I tried to kill my tick, only prolong type additives are worse.

To be expected from a hydrotreated aka group II base stock C>25 lol. The only time I've ever used something so needless was back in the day on my million mile + 302 that burned through 20W-50 like it was a 0 weight. Ah the good ol days of no money, keeping an old tank running, and less worries.

all this talk of warranty.. in the event of a failure, would it be a good idea to keep the dealer oil/filter that I changed out after only 1500 miles? Its still sitting in the redline jugs since i havent had time to drop it off at the recycler. wouldnt be hard to just drain the redline and fill back up with the dealer PYB oil in the event of a cam/lifter failure before having it towed off.. and its been run a little bit, so it definitely doesnt look like its fresh.

So... getting thru all these posts on the 'Hemi tick' here, I'm trying to sort things out to see if the recommendations apply to my issue.

I have a 2016 BH 5.7, that has a 'tick' on startup... which lasts from 30-45 seconds, before going away. Is this how everyone's "tick" starts?!? I use Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w20 (as recommended), change it religiously every 7,500 miles and have never had any issues with that brand of oil. I've used it in 3 Volvos (before I bought this truck) and those went strong to 200K and 225K miles.

At 55K miles on the truck, my factory warranty is obviously expired... but we bought an extended warranty with it for this very reason. So, is this something I should have looked at immediately or safe to run for a while? Will it get worse over time? Will the manifold bolts just all of a sudden 'break' on a trip up to the cabin??? I hope not.

Please advise when time permits. I'm a relatively new owner, and just realizing how widespread this issue is. We live in the Midwest, and winters are cold... so not sure going to a 30x oil is a good idea for those months. Just my .02 there.

Thanks in advance for any/all suggestions.

Gregg
