Quieting Hemi Tick

Burla #134. Used 7 ounces of Lubegard in my GN Turbo. Was getting just a bit of rotating noise in the turbo bearings. Lubeguard added to the RL 5-30 oil all quite now.

I hope if people have hemi tick to get a video on it, that way when you run redline 5w30 and a RP filter you have a before and after so people can see, this stuff really works.

Jegs seems to have the best price for the RP filters but unless you order $100 worth of stuff you have to pay shipping. So like Ronnie said Amazon is the best place...

My dealer installed PUP oil change doesn't seem like it's quiet-ed down the tick any... So either they pulled a fast one on the PUP, or it just isn't doing it for my motor. Only at startup, goes way in about 5 seconds. Looks like I'll be going Redline next.

I'd bet they used a Mopar filter which could be part of you're problem. Might try switching that out for a RP, Amsoil, or Fram Ultra filter first and see if that helps.

No problems with MDS whatsoever using the 5W-30? It is just the FCAs booo booo don't use 5W-30 in 1500 with MDS?

No problems at all. I’ve been running it in my RAM for the last 1800 miles and will continue to do until the oil guru’s find a better and/or cheaper alternative which ain’t too damn likely. This is the ONLY oil that I would consider using until the OLM tells me to change it.

Zero issues running Redline 5W-30 , I actually have ran 40 wt oil with no MDS issues either . There are several folks here on the forum that run 40wt oil in their 5.7L Hemi's with no MDS issues , actually in most people's opinions the MDS works smoother on 30+ wt oils .

The 20wt requirement is govt C.A.F.E. fuel saving BS ! The 20 wt oil increases gas mileage by an unnoticeable amount ( less than .3 mpg ) and doesn't have sufficient film strength or viscosity for oil pressure to adequately protect internal Engine parts imho [emoji1303]

I've been running a 5w30 for almost 20k miles now and no MDS issues and no check engine light for oil viscosity. 5w20 is for CAFE

I don’t think it’s so much the filter helping the tick. I use fram filter XG16 with my relocation kit and redline 5-30 and that seemed to do the trick with the tick......

So I have done several oil changes and reported caught the tick back with a puro filter, whereas the tick was never there with RP and 5w30 with the exception of when the truck sat for a month due to the fires up here. Why I recommend RP/Amsoil filters are two fold, number one full flow, and number two it will clean as good as the day you put it on til the day you take it off proven by cutting RP filters open many times with different intervals ranging from 1 year, to 14 months, to 2 years. Use whatever filter you like, but the forum's work on the issue has RP as a good choice. Try cutting that filter open at the end of your interval, update us that. I just use an oscillating tool myself.

That particular change all I did was spin the puro off and put a RP back, and tick was gone again. I proceeded to buy a case of RP filters off amazon.

Glad the redline killed your tick, there is a lot of that going on around here. I'm not questioning your filter choice, if it work good for you. I also encourage you to look at my oil filter thread, link in my sig. See where your filter shook out in the filtering. spun microglass, full flow, great filtering, long lasting.

Burla, i dont recall, but did you cut that puro filter open ? I ask as the folks on bitog say they are prone to tearing ? Thanks.

The thing you have to be careful with is which line of Purolator are we talking about. Just like Fram, the ultra is a well regarded filter, however base model not so much.

oil filter thread

I did not cut open puro filter because it was only on the truck for a day. I figured no reason to. That was their top of line filter. I would wager all paper filters tear when the glue that binds the paper hardens. And the paper filters don't even filter as good to start with, so literally the only reason to use a paper filter is cost, but the cheap comes out expensive in the long run imo. When the truck ticked on puro filters and not RP, I compared RP with the puro I still have. I will keep it, maybe someday I will do a quick flush and just use the puro fr a day again. This is what I've seen, there just wasn't enough holes in the puro filter for good flow. Mind you, the new puro synthetics have a cheese grater design, but regardless they have lost my business and no reason to stray from royal purple filters imo.

The basic flow and filter testing results posted on the forum do not require a engineering or chemist degree. Straight forward results says RP and Amsoil filters are Teir 1 effective, quality filters. Now the K&N high end filter results are up there. But they use a resin impregnated paper medium. Not for me after seeing how the synthetic medium performs.
