But in lower vehicles the animal is often lifted and launched into the windshield or over the top of the vehicle.

Yeah. That's what happens when you hit them in the legs. The body falls on the hood and then you drive under it if you hit it square. In a conversation about the push bumper, what happens after the push bumper is irrelevant to the topic, though.

Fun fact: Camels are the perfect height to fall in the passenger compartment of a Mustang convertible if you take them out at the legs at speed.

I'm not sure I believe deer whistles work either. But, my dad hit 2 deer by his house in his small Saturn. Put them on and didn't hit a deer ever again.

They don't. Buddy of mine hit 3 with whistles. We teased him he put them on backwards and was luring them in. Maybe your dad just slowed down a bit and paid more attention. I used to honk my horn before going around a certain curve near my old property so both drunks and deer would know I was coming around...

Some deer whitsles work others don't. I know it drives Labradors and other dogs nuts if you have them in a vehicle with whistles on it. If your dog can ride in your vehicle with whistles on it, they aren't the right ones. The good whistles makes a very high picthed sound that humans can't hear, thus you have no way of knowing which are working and which aren't except for a dog or cat's reaction.

I've had 2 near misses when the deer have nearly landed on my hood after jumping off 7-8 ft. embankment along narrow, winding back mountain road. Dense brush along both sides.. Fortunately both were in daylight and I caught the movement and slammed on my brakes. Was only going about 30 mph at time. Any faster and they would've landed on my hood. Luckily they landed just in front of truck and bounded off opposite side of road.
I almost needed a change of pants! LOL Picture of road on different day20210124_100818.jpg

I hit a large doe on I-75 north of Bay City, a couple of years ago. I was in a small cluster of traffic, and it came out of the median at a high gallop. I was in the canter lane, and hit it dead center at 75 mph. She sailed high, over all the other cars and into the field to the right. Since I was pulling a utility trailer, and didn't hear any abnormal noises, I didn't stop on the x-way, and kept going another couple miles to the next exit, eyeballing the temp gauge all the way. Upon inspection, I found that my bumper assumed a U-shape, and I was slowly losing coolant. Turns out that the radiator had been pushed back into, and punctured by the transmission oil cooler. Except for a couple small shallow dents in the hood, no sheet metal damage. The grille looked intact, but had to be replaced because one of the lower mounting studs had broken off. Total repair was a little over five grand. This happened just a little before noon, and at the speed I was traveling, I doubt that any add-on would have reduced the damage.

Buckstop can build you a non-winch aluminum bumper perhaps.

If you want really tough off road bumpers and front end protection, custom made at very good prices. Prices are Canadian so you gain 25% on the exchange. You see a lot of oil patch truck with these bumpers on them.

Roo bars are popular here, but the cop style still leaves your fenders vulnerable. I've got some whistles that I've never installed. Don't know how effective they'd be. We've written off the front quarter of a Civic, a headlight of a Jeep, and with an elk, the front end of a Kenworth.
Story: On the way home one Christmas in the Smart car two or three deer crossed in front of us. The ABS was no help at all, so off the brakes and steer between them. There's a THUMP on the driver's side. We stopped and looked up and down the highway- no deer. Pulled back onto the highway and realized my left mirror was way out of line.
And that's how Rudolph got his red nose.

If you want to see real damage from light critters hit something with the old style Ram plastic bumpers. Still can't believe they put those on 2500's.

Damn. That was a shot. Similar to mine from about a month ago, yours just pushed in a little further. All you can be thankful for is it’s just the bumper. Same thing as mine. Body shop guy I know said he’s seen much worse from deer strikes, grill, hood, fenders etc. I guess he’s right. But your right, it still sucks.

The bumper on my 95 was made by UTE, a company in Australia. I was part of a "group buy" in the TDR, (Turbo Diesel Register) Needless to say, I loved that bumper, and being aluminum it didn't way down the front end. There is an American company that makes one very similar, not cheap, and not sure if they would fit the 1500's. It is called Herd.

All that shows is your dog reacts. Deer don't react like dogs do. They are prey animals, not predators. Do you see horses react to your deer whistle? Cows? Actual testing of various pitches has shown deer don't alter their behavior due to hearing it, although using brain scans and other methods have shown they can hear it.

A friend recently had his new F150 completely disabled by hitting a small deer. His bumper buckled enough to puncture the right front tire and radiator. My 1500 Laramie has chrome bumpers and grill. My lifestyle is slowly shifting to more time on the road (towing my travel trailer). I would like to add some kind of protection for deer and other road hazards. I would like to keep it not too flashy or large. I only have 6" of clearance to fit in my garage. I don't want something that's pretty, but useless. I'm totally clueless to this particular kind of stuff. Thoughts or suggestions?
Tie your ex-girlfriend to the bumper. She will love the wind blowing through her hair and wide open view. And you will have peace of mind knowing that your frontend is well protected…lol.

Well, that is an interesting perspective I hadn't thought of. I do know the RCMP put whistles on their cruisers in a lot of areas here in Alberta and claim the number of deer strikes dropped a lot, but that isn't really scientific proof, merely more anecdotal information.
