Finished lapping my valves, removed the phaser, and pulled the driver side oil galley pipe plug there was still some oil toward the rear. I did not see anything else in there, buildup, etc.

There was some sort of sealant on the plug, which I likely don't have. I believe its a tapered pipe plug.

Can I use some blue loctite, or do I need to go buy something else.

I'm gonna leave the passenger side galley plug alone, being that driver side was clear as far as I could tell.

Hunt up some pipe dope/sealant with PTFE Ed,as it's a NPT plug.

Odds are it wouldn't leak oil past the threads with blue loctite, but if it did,it really suck having to pull it down again just to reseal a leaking pipe plug ;)

Says seals threaded metal fittings on hydrauluc, pneumatic, fuel, and cooling systems.

Is this ok? Or, am I going back to the parts store?

I left it alone for now.

I bought a Motorad 192° thermostat. I tested it on the stove and it started opening around 196°, was fully open around 205°, as near as my old eyes can tell.

I removed it from the heat, and it was nearly closed at 192°. So, it looks like it is working ok, at least for now.

It'll probably work perfectly fine Ed.I use either ARP thread sealant or Loctite 592 thread sealant, neither one has ever let me down, but the Permatex brand is probably just as good.

Yea, I went on the Permatex website and looked at that stuff. Website says, "contains PTFE". I don't see it anywhere on the package, though.

It'll be perfectly fine Ed,i wouldn't worry about it.It's probably virtually identical to either the Loctite or ARP versions of thread sealant.

I might just as well pull the passenger side plug now. Ed luck says if I don't, there'll be an issue.....lol.

Seriously, I can now put a dab on the block drains while I'm at it.

Thanks for putting up with me second-guesssing myself. I am decently mechanically inclined, but this is only the 2nd engine I've ever torn into (by myself).

Went ahead and pulled the passener side oil galley plug. Looked same as driver side, some oil still in rear part of galley. Cleaned off the oil galley plugs, added thread sealer, torqued to 20 ft-lbs.

Installed the thrust plate, cam phaser + new bolt w/loctite, torqued to 90 ft-lbs. (My God, did it seem like it was never gonna click my FIL's Snap-on 1/2" drive 50-250 lb torque wrench)

Hope timing is set right:

Installed guide and tensioner, 8 ft-lbs this time....lol.

Gonna give the chain a coating of assembly lube, then install the oil pump.

It's a lot of money we sometimes don'r have to do the job right....BUT....If we skipped a step we knew deep down we should have done, from then on, every noise or hiccup, you would be wondering and worrying if that's the part causing that you should have replaced.

Been there, done that.....

My dad used to shortcut repairs on his cars sometimes. I would try to talk him into doing it right, which occasionally worked, especially if I finished the job.

He would get ticked when I would pull out the old line..."If you don't have the time to do it right this time, when will you ever have the time to do it again when it breaks".

I've been out checking the brake caliper slide pins for proper lube. I put new slotted rotors on front a while back, but couldn't remember if I checked the pins or not.

Whether I did or not, the front drivers side had enough lube to last 20 years, so I didn't bother to check the rest, as all the boots looked good.

That, and the humidity feels like it's 125%. I didn't do much and look like I fell in the river.

I heard that. Temps here weren't too bad. At least it wasn't blistering hot like a couple weeks ago.

I tried to convince myself that it would be ok to use the old valves and rocker arms, even when various members here suggested replacing them, but deep down I knew it was best.

I have to update my parts list, I will probably just repost it with additions. I've spent just over 5K in parts, tax, and shipping over 5 or 6 orders, could've saved a bit there, and probably didn't have to replace all I've bought, but 200k is ALOT of miles with no issues. Also dropped another $700 ish for cheap oil and filters, RedLine oil and a premium filter, coolant, some tools and various supplies, and one of @caulk04's 8HP70 thermostat bypasses, etc.

All parts OE except, FelPro intake, valve cover, exhaust manifold gaskets, and injector o-rings.

The only parts I won't have changed are cam, crank, rod bearings, pistons, rings, and rear main seal.

Fingers crossed I get her put together correctly and she runs....lol
