Gear oil stinks to high heaven. :puke:
Abandoned my fantasy of converting my std. 3:55 to anti-spin because of the cost and decided to treat the gears to fresh juice instead. Just under 3 qts. of Valvoline Full Synthetic 75W-140, a LubeLocker gasket and Spectre chrome cover plus a couple of hours inhaling gear oil fumes and it's done.

Before (my paint on the cover)

After

I bumped the pan & spilled oil all over the moving blanket I was using, and all my tools.
Blanket, gloves & many rags all into the trash. Cleanup was massive & stinky.

The FO panhard bar is 0"- 4" adjustable and is thicker and closer to the cover.
A finned oversize cover wouldn't fit in there, the Spectre is OE style, looks good & came w/bolts & gasket (which I didn't use). The Hellwig sway bar has plenty of clearance.

Tomorrow is front & rear Callahan drilled/slotted rotors & pads.

If you think gear oil stinks, take a whiff of the friction modifier for a limited slip. Smells like the **** house door on a tuna boat. You may be glad you didn't go to an LSD

Does the new additive stuff smell like that old suregrip ****? That was the worst ever back in the 70s when I used it.

Yes it does stink! One time I was doing a lube swap and the tube connected to the gear oil bottle I was squeezing blew off and gear oil went all over my face and went in my ear drum lol that was fun. On top of that in my spastic move to get out from under the vehicle I kicked over the other bottle of gear lube I had sitting next to me with the top off ready to go when I finished the bottle I was squeezing.... yea it went everywhere and my garage stunk for 2 damn months!!!

Pretty much exactly what I did last year...also used a LubeLocker gasket and the Valvoline lube. Also gave up on the idea (unfortunately) of upgrading to a posi rear and 4.56 gears due to the probable $2500-$3000 cost!

Used gear lube does have a certain fragrance from the oxidization. When it is burnt, it 1000x worse. I had a diff on my old F250 that died due to burnt gear lube. The tech who rebuilt it said he had to use a painters respirator with charcoal canisters to clean out the pumpkin and it was the worst he had ever smelled.

I’ve got 38k on my 3.92s might just vacuum mine out this winter and replace with the best-what would that be? What would you guys recommend on a “I don’t care what it costs gear lube replacement”

I think some brands of that rear-end lube have some sort of a friction modifier added into it and you don't have to buy that little stinky bottle from Mopar. I always have a bag of kitty litter handy to help clean up the mess I know I'm going to make.

I know both Mobil 1 and Valvoline gear lubes both already have a friction modifier in them.

Nearly every otc synthetic gear fluid has additive already in it, it is custom or boutique to find synthetic oils w/o additive. On the shelf it is likely conventional oil if there is no additive. Just like all the lubrication, there was a huge one size fits all push to save blenders time and money and save shelf space.

The auto manu's have allowed this and even open diffs are getting spec'd for additive already in there. I'm sure this benefits them as well, historically the more **** you have laying around your shop is going to end up where it don't belong, so there is a huge push to have fewer options and they have determined that except for ancient gear boxes the amount of additive is not creating too much slip. Many places don't even talk about additive anymore, it is just excepted that synthetic multi-purpose gear lubricant means it is acceptable for lsd's. I don't even think m1 makes a synthetic that doesn't have additive, dunno haven't looked in a while.

Personally, I love the smell of it.
